To the Metropolitan Atlanta Community:

For over twenty three years, the Rollins School of Public Health and the Goizueta Business School have honored the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Service Awards Program. This celebration grew out of a 1993 conversation between Dr. Joyce Essien and then Dean of the School of Public Health, Ray Greenburg, where they agreed that it was time to align the mission and values of Public Health with the precepts of social justice. With support from James Curran, Dean of the Rollins School of Public Health and Erika James, Dean of the Goizueta Business School, as well as with the diligent work of faculty, staff, and students, this program has grown to be a major event on the calendar of King Week activities held at Emory. Our program is the only event that has consistently recognized and celebrated people and organizations in greater Atlanta whose work exemplifies the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

As in the past, this year's program is sponsored by the Rollins School of Public Health and the Goizueta Business School. Our theme is “Refusing the New Normal: Being a Part of the Change.” This event will take place on Thursday, January 21, 2016 at 4:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Claudia Nance Rollins Building, in the Rollins School of Public Health, (1518 Clifton Road NE, Atlanta, GA 30322) and will be followed by a catered reception. We will have a performance by AHANA A Cappella as well as a spoken word artist, Paula Fontana.

The featured speaker this year will be Rev. Dr. Francys Johnson. Combining a passion for helping people through law, education, and faith, Francys Johnson is called to serve this present age. He is the State President of the Georgia NAACP having been elected in October 2013 as the youngest person to hold that office.

This year’s honorees include:

Atlanta Children’s Shelter
Books for Keeps
Covenant House Georgia
Georgia Law Center for the Homeless
The Health Initiative
Intown Collaborative Ministries (ICM)
Kelly On My Mind
Marjy Stagmeier
New American Pathways

Warrick Dunn Charities

We hope that you will join us for this celebration of service.

Sincerely,

Laurie Gaydos, Ph.D.
