Position Description:

JOB TITLE: Epidemiologist

TRAVEL:  As required to fulfill the responsibilities of the position

IHRC, Inc. provides scientific, information management, management consulting, bioinformatics, and administrative program support to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other Federal and private sector clients. The successful candidate will be assigned work in Tanzania, Africa to provide support for the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR).  

The Epidemiologist will provide support and technical assistance to successfully implement key epidemiological and research activities.  This position is contingent upon contract award.

  • Support the design and implementation of behavioral and biological surveillance among military personnel
  • Facilitate and coordinate the collection and testing of biological samples including but not limited to HIV, syphilis, gonorrhea, viral load (VL) and CD4 cells
  • Support and facilitate the development of protocols and Institutional Review Board (IRB) documentation, produce and deliver surveys and training manuals, create databases, and provide other support as needed.
  • Assist with ordering and delivery of study materials including testing materials and reagents.
  • Assist with training for study data collection, data entry, dissemination and other training needs as necessary.
  • Support capacity building needs for specialized and professional training
  • Support the establishment of a formal platform/structure for scientific and capacity building engagement such as Cooperative Research and Development Agreements (CRADA)/Memorandum of Agreement
  • Conduct surveillance and outbreak response activities
  • Expand sustainable surveillance and epidemiology training to support research, innovation and integration initiatives that emphasize an eventual enhancement of health protection
  • Conduct Site level routine Data Quality Assurance (DQA) and Site Improvement Monitoring Systems (SIMS) visits to assist with assessments, organization and management of various Monitoring and Evaluation (M & E), and data use processes and activities



Education and Experience:

  • M.S. or Ph.D. Degree in epidemiology, or a related discipline


  • Experience with surveillance and outbreak response
  • Expertise in the use of SAS, SPSS, Stata, or other statistical software
  • Proficiency in SAS programing
  • Experience in the development and delivery of surveys and training manuals
  • Experience in the creation and maintenance of databases
  • Organizational skills demonstrating high attention to detail and the ability to organize multiple priorities
  • Strong interpersonal skills required for team work and interaction with multiple stakeholders
  • Experience with the design and implementation of research and epidemiologic studies
  • Excellent written and oral communications
  • Experience conducting site visits for the purpose of routine Quality Assurance and Improvement assessments
  • Experience authoring standard operating procedures
  • Demonstrated experience writing project reports, research protocols and manuscripts


  • Experience in the development of protocols and Institutional Review Board (IRB) documentation
  • Experience working within the guidelines of a quality management system
  • Expertise in the use of ArcGIS, EpiInfo, and similar software
  • Proficiency in writing comprehensive statistical and analytical reports
  • Previous experience interacting and effectively communicating with a diverse set of stakeholders, including clinicians, public health professionals, and laboratorians
  • Experience identifying partners for Cooperative Research and Development Agreements (CRADA), and maintaining effective relationships
  • Experience with the organization, management and analysis of data related to monitoring and evaluation activities and the creation of reports and process improvement documentation
  • Previous experience working in a similar role
  • Demonstrated ability to synthesize new research ideas for project research

Language Skills:

  • The candidate must possess excellent oral and written communication skills in English
