Position Description: A fellowship opportunity is available in the National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, GA. The ORISE fellow will work in the Reference Laboratory Team (RLT) in the Division of TB Elimination Laboratory Branch.

Specific activities may include: • Training in molecular test validation within a CLIA regulated environment • Evaluating and implementing molecular assays for the detection of mutations associated with drug resistance in Mycobacterium tuberculosis using next generation sequencing (NGS) platforms • Training for work in a BSL-3 laboratory environment• Participating in Branch and Team meetings • Assisting in drafting and reviewing internal documents and reports under a Quality Management System (QMS) • Maintaining communication with RLT Team Lead • Ensuring laboratory equipment maintenance and calibration • Assisting with the development and implementation of resources for competency assessment, biosafety, and QMS

This fellow will be engaged with Branch leadership and technical staff. Opportunities for networking with subject matter experts will be made available. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed for an additional year upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Participants do not become employees of CDC and there are no fringe benefits paid.

Qualifications: The fellow should have a Master's or PhD (earned within past five years) in microbiology, molecular genetics, or other related discipline. Proficiency in performing NGS and analyzing sequencing data from these platforms is required. Some experience working in a CLIA regulated environment is preferred. Excellent oral and written communication skills are required.
