Position Description: Mercyhurst University’s Department of Public Health seeks applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Public Health in our well-established undergraduate program serving over 100 majors and minors. Applicants should have an established track- record of teaching excellence at the undergraduate or graduate level and other professional experience in the areas of public health research, epidemiology, health promotion and/or health education. Other research interests and practical experience spanning community, global, environmental and population health sciences are also welcome to apply, as we offer a highly flexible inter-disciplinary curriculum in public health leading to either a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts as well as a public health minor. Our program is among the largest stand-alone undergraduate programs in public health, with demonstrated excellence in the areas of undergraduate teaching, faculty-mentored research, community collaboration and service. The teaching load is 8 total courses per academic year (4 per semester), with all courses taught at the undergraduate level. Courses may include any among our core required courses including Foundations of Public Health, Health Policy & Law, Global Health, Social Determinants of Health, Environmental Health, Health Education, Principles of Epidemiology, Biostatistics as well as elective courses reflecting the faculty member’s area of expertise. Faculty also have the opportunity to lead or co-lead faculty-led study abroad courses which in the past have included Puerto Rico, Haiti, Viet Nam and Mexico among others. The position will include significant mentorship of students completing both research and practicum requirements and additional service to the department and university including playing a key role in student recruitment, engagement and retention and other departmental activities outside the classroom. Applied research in the community that supports student learning is strongly emphasized over research that is not directly related to the learning outcomes of our undergraduate curriculum.

Qualifications: Preferred qualifications: Applicants should have earned a PhD or DrPH in a public health discipline including epidemiology, public health, global health or health education by the start of appointment, with preference given to those with previous teaching experience. Additionaly, experience working in community-based public health settings is strongly preferred. Minimum qualifications: PhD in related discipline with MPH or other Master’s level public health degree and demonstrated commitment to undergraduate teaching, a record of promising scholarship, experience working with diverse populations in the classroom and the community, and a willingness and desire to serve as an undergraduate mentor and advisor.
