Position Description: The Biological Scientist II position is under the supervision of the Biological Administrator I - SES. The incumbent provides services to the Epidemiology and Communicable Disease control Serives. The incumbent must be fully knowledgeable about the responsibilities of the position. The incumbent may be required to work during or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency. Emergency operation functions required of the incumbent include but are not limited to Special Needs Shelters, or other emergency functions. This position has access to the following Information Sets: Epi, Immunizations, School Health, Vital Statistics. The incumbent is knowledgeable about all aspects of communicable disease and works with the Disease Control team regarding prevention and control of communicable disease and enhances early intervention by the rapid response team. The incumbent has continuous contact with the Environmental Health section and private providers regarding communicable disease issues and reportable disease cases. The incumbent is a member of the disease control investigation team for reportable diseases and outbreaks as outlined on the Reportable Disease List. Distributes pamphlets and other information as requested. Assist the supervisor with records, phone calls, relaying messages and keeping staff informed of sensitive situations when necessary. The incumbent will be available to be assigned to cases which may require field work outside the office which will require a valid Florida Drivers License in order to use a county vehicle.

Rabies Control: This includes, but is not limited to following activities: maintaining daily contact with Lee County Animal Services (LCAS) for review and disposition of bite cases; field evaluation of quarantined animals, educating victims/families, hospital staff, and other health care providers; administering rabies prophylaxis as indicated per protocol; coordinating with dedicated LCHD billing clerk to collect fee for services using established protocol; acting as a direct liaison and consultant to LCAS and LCHD by entering pertinent bite case information into the LCAS Chameleon software.

The incumbent assists with Prenatal Hepatitis B follow up, maintaining contact with the local hospitals, OB/GYN providers, and pediatric providers.

Assist the public with accurate information when they phone and assist in allaying fears in a calm and professional manner. Prepare reports, surveys, data studies, answer questionnaries and any other necessary paperwork as required by the position. At the request or permission of the supervisor, attend meetings, conferences, symposiums and any programs pertinent to the postiion or nursing practice that will keep the incumbent current. Provides in-services to the staff as requested or required. Performs related work as required, including a assignment during disaster.

Qualifications: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: •Bachelor’s degree from an accredited c college or university with a major in one of t the biological sciences and two years of p professional biological, or public health, e experience in a field or laboratory program, o or; •A master’s degree from an accredited c college or university in one of the b biological science or public health and one y year of professional experience as described a above, or •A doctorate from an accredited college or u university in one of the biological sciences.
