IHRC, Inc. provides scientific, information management, management consulting, bioinformatics, and administrative program support to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other Federal and private sector clients.  The successful candidate will be a full-time employee of IHRC, Inc., and will be assigned to the Gastroenteritis and Respiratory Viruses Laboratory Branch (GRVLB), Division of Viral Diseases, National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD), at the CDC, 1600 Clifton Road, Atlanta, GA, to provide scientific and technical support for the GRVLB.

SCOPE OF WORK

The Microbiologist I will provide scientific and technical support including administration of laboratory activities, preparation of rotavirus proficiency testing samples, and diagnostic testing of human clinical specimens.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform specimen accessioning using STARLims® electronic specimen records database and inventory maintenance.
  • Order laboratory supplies and maintain supply inventories.
  • Maintain laboratory in compliance with requirements of the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA) and CDC Quality Management System.
  • Maintain laboratory in compliance with CDC laboratory biosafety requirements; prepare, edit and maintain laboratory protocols and procedures.
  • Perform recurring, standard laboratory tests to identify rotaviruses, including extraction of nucleic acids using automated extraction instruments and commercial enzyme immunoassays.
  • Prepare reports describing sample testing data.
  • Assist in training of new personnel in laboratory test methods.
  • Perform technical activities leading to production of rotavirus proficiency testing samples.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree with at least 24 semester hours in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry or related disciplines appropriate to the position being filled.

Required:

  • Research experience involving preparation and handling of nucleic acid samples, real-time PCR, ELISA, and other standard laboratory methods
  • Knowledge of biosafety requirements for research being performed
  • Must have proof of immunization for Hepatitis B
  • Strong teamwork skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Documentation of daily work with good laboratory practice compliance
  • Experience writing project reports, research protocols and standard operating procedures

Desirable:

  • Advanced degree in a scientific discipline
  • Experience writing and developing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Experience working with Microsoft Access
  • Experience maintaining chain-of- custody
  • Experience working in a similar capacity in a Public Health setting
  • Experience with the development and evaluation and optimization of in vitro diagnostic assays, including immunoassays
  • Experience working in a CLIA environment
  • Experience maintaining inventory of samples using MS Excel and Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
  • Ability to work and build coalitions with partners involved, and develop strategies to effectively convey information to partners
  • Ability to work independently and yet to maintain the flexibility to respond to requests for support of ongoing projects

Language Skills:

  • The candidate must possess excellent oral and written communication skills in English
