IHRC, Inc. provides scientific, information management, management consulting, bioinformatics, and administrative program support to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other Federal and private sector clients.  The successful candidate will be a full-time employee of IHRC, Inc., and will be assigned to the Gastroenteritis and Respiratory Viruses Laboratory Branch (GRVLB), Division of Viral Diseases, National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD), at the CDC, 1600 Clifton Road, Atlanta, GA, to provide scientific and technical support for the GRVLB. 

SCOPE OF WORK

The Microbiologist I will provide scientific and technical support for the GRVLB.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform testing of surveillance samples submitted to the CDC using techniques including nucleic acid extraction, multi- pathogen screening assays, Quantitative Reverse- Transcriptase Polymerase Chain Reaction (qRT- PCR), Enzyme Immunoassay (EIA), genotyping Reverse-Transcription-Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR), Sanger sequencing, and next generation sequencing. 
  • Perform entry of sample testing data into program surveillance databases.
  • Arrange and perform laboratory maintenance duties. 
  • Facilitate daily operations of the laboratory including activity coordination and procurement of reagents and supplies.
  • Assist in implementing a laboratory Quality Management System (QMS) at the laboratory and branch levels.
  • Prepare reports and manuscripts describing sample testing data.
  • Present data and findings to the CDC staff and the scientific community at internal, domestic and international meetings.
  • Participate in laboratory training activities.
  • Participate in CDC Emergency Response activities as required.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree with at least 24 semester hours in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry or related disciplines appropriate to the position being filled.

Required:

  • Research experience involving preparation and handling of nucleic acid samples, real-time PCR, ELISA, and other standard laboratory methods
  • Knowledge of biosafety requirements for research being performed
  • Experience working with Microsoft Office, Access, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Must have proof of immunization for Hepatitis B

Desirable:

  • Experience working with next generation sequencing platforms such as Illumina, 454, or Ion Torrent
  • Experience with bioinformatics software tools for the analysis of sequencing data produced by next generation sequencing platforms
  • Demonstrated skills and experience writing project reports, research protocols and manuscripts
  • Previous experience working in a similar role
  • Demonstrated ability to synthesize new research ideas for project research
  • Demonstrated experience developing real-time PCR or ELISA based in vitro diagnostic assays

Language Skills:

  • The candidate must possess excellent oral and written communication skills in English
