The Safe Routes to School National Partnership (National Partnership) is seeking an energetic and community- oriented professional with a strong commitment to building health through community-centered engagement and deep knowledge of DC’s Wards 7 and 8 to join the National Partnership as our DC Community Engagement Manager. We welcome applicants with a passion for advancing safe walking and bicycling in schools and communities and a dedication to creating safe, livable, equitable, sustainable communities.

The DC Community Engagement Manager will be responsible for implementing a one-year community safety and engagement project in Wards 7 and 8 of Washington, DC. The project will leverage five school communities as hubs for community-focused traffic safety education and activities. Activities include engaging community members and school officials; developing trainings and resources on safe walking, biking, and driving; holding community traffic safety events; and conducting surveys and walk audits to identify needed safety improvements around each of the five schools.

We are particularly looking for individuals that have the following qualifications:

Minimum of three years’ experience in active transportation or public health. Experience working on Safe Routes to School or active transportation issues; experience with Vision Zero a plus. Strong relationships in and/or knowledge of Wards 7 and 8. Experience developing trainings and facilitating workshops for community members. The skillset necessary to develop and support effective teams of leaders including school personnel, agency officials, student family members, and community residents. Data analysis skills allowing an assessment of various transportation safety and health indicators and creation of a school prioritization matrix. Strong writing skills allowing creation of range of resources, such as community outreach materials, safety recommendation reports, and a toolkit with lessons and success stories. Ability to travel regularly within DC’s Wards 7 & 8 and occasionally work evenings and weekends; potential for some limited out of state travel. Ability to work from home, to work independently (self-starter) and as a team member with minimal supervision. Self-motivated, organized, flexible, adaptive, detail oriented, and creative. A deep understanding of and experience with authentic, equity-focused, community- centered engagement, as well as building consensus from diverse viewpoints. The salary range for this at-will position is $50,000 – $55,000 depending on experience and qualifications, plus health insurance benefits, paid time off, and optional participation in a deferred compensation plan. A PC computer, telephone and internet access will be provided. Successful candidates will work from their home office, and must be based in Washington DC.
