Position Description: The University of Maryland Marlene & Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center has an opportunity for a Senior Epidemiologist which will be housed at the Maryland Department of Health at 201 W. Preston Street, Baltimore. This position will design and lead data collection, quantitative and qualitative analysis, report preparation, database support, and report writing for multiple, varied surveillance projects across the Center for Cancer Prevention and Control (CCPC) in the Maryland Department of Health (MDH). The individual will recommend and conduct best methods for data analysis, respond to data requests from outside stakeholders; provide technical expertise when examining data findings, and produce surveillance statistics and create legislative surveillance reports using established data surveillance systems such as the Maryland Cancer Registry, Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Study, and the Vital Statistics Administration. The individual will work in collaboration with staff across CCPC and MDH.

Essential Functions

  • Designing and conducting quantitative and qualitative data analysis for projects across CCPC.

  • Producing surveillance statistics and creating legislative, surveillance, and other related reports.

  • Make recommendations for disease control activities and prevention based on research findings.

  • Communicate to staff legal expectations, limitations, and implications of collection, management, dissemination, and using data. Lead collaborations with investigators and recommends best methods for data collection and analysis.

  • Design and/or employ tools and methods to evaluate the effectiveness of programs and initiatives in CCPC.

  • Responding to data requests from outside stakeholders.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Education: Master's degree in epidemiology, statistics, biostatistics, mathematics, public health, health sciences or services.

Experience: Two (2) years’ experience analyzing studies using a range of statistical techniques in a related environment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of surveillance and epidemiological data collection, research methods, study design, and analysis.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with a wide variety of data structures, coding schemes, and data sources using a range of univariate and /or multivariate statistical techniques.

  • Ability to effectively use technology in data analysis and management.

  • Skill in using surveillance systems to monitor problems and analyze data trends.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects or tasks involving multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Ability to interact professionally and courteously colleagues and public stakeholders.

  • Skill in communicating effectively, both in written and oral communications, with lay and public health communities.
