Position Description: We are currently seeking an epidemiologist to work with Tennessee’s Foodborne Diseases Active Surveillance Network (FoodNet) Program. FoodNet is a collaborative effort between CDC and 10 state health departments to conduct active population-based surveillance for illnesses commonly transmitted through food. FoodNet estimates the number of foodborne illnesses, monitors trends in incidence of specific foodborne illnesses over time, attributes illnesses to specific foods and settings, and disseminates this information for food safety and policy decision making. This epidemiologist will work within the foodborne disease programs on important core surveillance activities in Tennessee (TN). FoodNet collects standardized food and nonfood exposures from persons diagnosed with Salmonellosis, Campylobacteriosis and Shigellosis. FoodNet is increasing the focus on surveillance data for attribution studies, antimicrobial resistance studies and other surveillance estimates. The epidemiologist will draft data collection tools; create, manage and link databases, and manipulate and clean the data for transmission to CDC FoodNet. This epidemiologist will collaborate with FoodNet, FoodCORE and regional and local health department staff to ensure case interviews and data entry occurs in a timely fashion. This epidemiologist will also have an active role in outbreak response activities, and will be expected to lead and assist with cluster and outbreak investigations as needed. The eCEA epidemiologist will also assist the outbreak coordinator in creating tools to rapidly evaluate case exposures during cluster and outbreak investigations.

Qualifications: Preferred qualifications: - Proficiency with statistical software, experienced in writing original statistical and analytical programming code, preferably in SAS. - Strong data management, database management, and database development skills (REDCap experience beneficial). - Ability to extract, clean, and manage data from multiple sources with limited guidance. - Ability to conduct basic descriptive analyses of data. - Collaborative problem solver; the ideal candidate would excel at evaluating the impacts a proposed change may have to surveillance systems, data, and workflows. - Strong oral and written communication skills. - Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff epidemiologists, regional and local health department staff, and the community. - 2 years applied epidemiology/biostatistics experience. Minimum Qualifications: Education and Experience: The minimum qualifications for this level will be a master’s degree in epidemiology, public health, biostatistics, statistics or health informatics. Degree must be from an accredited college or university. OR Substitution of Experience for Education: A master’s degree in a health science, biomedical science or environmental science field with two years’ work experience in epidemiology. Degree must be from an accredited college or university. A transcript evaluation is required for degrees earned outside the United States. Candidates must be eligible to work in the U.S. A background check will be performed on the selected candidate.
