Position Description: Responsibilities: Central Registry Cancer Specialist IIs (aka medical coders) assess data, ascertain whether data are accurate, consolidate data, diagnose and repair errors, and enter the data into computerized records. These records are essential to the fulfillment of the New York State Cancer Registry (NYSCR)’s mandate, which is to reduce the burden of cancer among New Yorkers. The NYSCR collects data for use in determining cancer rates and trends, for health policy and planning, for epidemiological research (including case- control studies), for evaluation of cancer control interventions, and to identify and target high-risk populations. Using knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and the cancer disease process, medical coders: • Assess the validity of available information on a tumor • Consolidate the best information from all sources into a single tumor record that includes diagnostic, treatment, demographic, and outcome information • Determine whether multiple reports for an individual represent one or multiple tumors • Enter non-electronic case information through the CDC-developed Abstract Plus reporting software • Become proficient with the SEER*DMS system, including the use of the edit function to make corrections, and the re- associate function to combine duplicate reports On occasion, medical coders contact reporting facilities (hospitals, laboratories, radiation treatment centers, managed care organizations, and diagnostic and treatment centers) by telephone to resolve conflicting medical information or to obtain missing medical or demographic information. * This job is one level of a series (Cancer Registry Cancer Specialist, Cancer Registry Cancer Specialist I, Cancer Registry Cancer Specialist II). Candidates will be hired at the level appropriate to their qualifications, and their applications. Candidates can only be hired for a position level they have applied for, and are encouraged to apply for all three.

Qualifications: Minimum Qualifications: A Bachelor’s degree in a related field; OR an Associate’s degree in a related field plus two years of experience in a related field (experience in medical/disease coding preferred); OR four years of experience in a related field OR certification as a tumor registrar (CTR). RHIT and/or RHIA designation desirable. Accepted related fields are Biology; Community Health Education; Health Promotion; Health Communication; Healthcare Administration; Health Information Management; Health Information Technology; Histotechnology; Nursing; Nutrition; Physical Therapy Assistant; Physician's Assistant; and Public Health Preferred Qualifications: Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR). Thorough knowledge of biology, anatomy, and physiology. Nursing experience and/or completion of a two-year program leading to a Registered Health Information Technician credential and/or completion of a four-year program leading to a Registered Health Information Administrator credential. Experience working in either a hospital tumor registry or a central registry. Ability to code cancer using ICD-O-3. Experience with Microsoft Office products.
