Position Description: MCI is fully funded for 2018 and is in the next growth stage after start-up. We’re ready for systems and structure to be put into place and expanded upon so that we can re-frame contraception for the 21st century.

We are looking for an experienced visionary leader who has alliance-building and fundraising skills, strong management and organizational development knowledge and expertise, a deep understanding of and respect for science and scientific method, and excellent communication and strategic planning skills. (The website is being redesigned and the new site will be published in May 2018.)

Core Responsibilities

Relationship Building/Fundraising Develop partnerships with public and private organizations and research institutions; align the interests of multiple partners collaborating to advance the development of new male contraceptives. Engage and leverage MCI’s Scientific Advisory Board as advisors for our research strategy, and grant reviewers in our growing grants program. Lead development efforts, including relationship development, grant applications, individual, foundation, and corporate donor campaigns. Work with board development committee to identify and cultivate donors and new board members. Explore the establishment of an endowment for financial sustainability and security. Deepen relationship with current donors.

Organizational and Fiscal Management Understand the natural development of a new non-profit organization and provide guidance for staff and board roles and responsibilities. Move the board from hands-on to expert advisory and governing roles. Successfully guide MCI’s programs and operations to meet its goals by developing policies and practices that create a positive organizational culture. Develop and secure board approval of annual operating budget and long-term financial plans. Work with contract attorneys on personnel/HR, outside contractor agreements, and templates for researcher grant awards. Ensure MCI meets annual budget goals and progress is made toward long-term financial sustainability. Provide strong, visible, organizational guidance and leadership. Evaluate staffing needs; hire and manage staff and contractors to develop and support effective programs and communications. Provide strong coaching, performance- and career-development plans for staff. Supervise Director of Programs as re: our competitive research grant process, including review of applications and monitoring progress of grantees in the larger context of MCI organizational reporting to funders. Provide advice and guidance to the Board of Directors to assist them in setting policy and monitoring MCI’s success. Together with Board Chair, set board meeting agendas, and co-facilitate quarterly meetings.

Communications Demonstrate a clear vision of how advancing male contraceptive methods will make an impact in society. Represent MCI at national conferences, on advisory boards and at leadership events. Encourage collaboration and information sharing across MCI and with external audiences. Establish and maintain a strong positive public image of MCI. Work to continually increase and improve community awareness of MCI and its mission. Deepen and expand relationship to the scientific community. Handle media inquiries/PR.

Strategic Planning Evaluate MCI’s progress against its mission and realign as needed. Review and implement the 2018-9 operational plan; and create a 3-year strategic plan moving forward. Explore strategies, including formation of a global alliance, to support researchers to take promising new male contraceptive agents from the lab to FDA-approved clinical trials, and ensure global access to new contraception methods.

Qualifications: Master’s Degree in public health, science/medical, non-profit administration, business, or other related field. Excellent oral and written communication skills Successful implementation of grant funded projects with multiple partners Demonstrated track record of securing and maintaining institutional, individual and corporate funding 5-10 years of management experience in non-profit or academic setting. A collegial style and great sense of humor. Entrepreneurial spirit and experience in growing an organization. Deep awareness of contraception and reproductive health issues strongly preferred. Published medical research papers preferred.

Organization Description: Male Contraception Initiative (MCI) is a four-year-old organization based in Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina, whose mission is “To facilitate research & development of male contraceptives for people around the world and to build awareness among researchers, donors and the general public about the demand for and status of novel male contraceptive methods.”
