Position Description: About the Position and Office of Environmental Health & Safety The mission of the Office of Environmental Health & Safety (OEHS) is to improve the health of people in Washington State by reducing and preventing, where possible, human exposures to a variety of environmental hazards and disease pathogens associated with the disposal of wastewater, the food we eat, the schools our children attend, and the places we recreate and overnight. Washington State has an international reputation for safe shellfish; however, illness outbreaks occasionally occur and sporadic illness reports are common in the summer months. This position will help us be more proactive to prevent shellfish-related illnesses, such as illnesses associated with Vibrio. As the Illness Prevention Coordinator, this position will provide epidemiological expertise and leadership to biotoxin and Vibrio staff and coordinate pollution-related illness investigations with the Growing Area Section. This is a permanent full-time Public Health Advisor 3 (PHA 3) within the Division of Environmental Public Health, Office of Environmental Health & Safety.

What will you be doing? – Duties include: Tracking shellfish illnesses and reporting and exchanging information with DOH Communicable Disease Epidemiology staff, the Food Program, local health jurisdictions, and other partners.

Gathering data and drawing conclusions to help us be successful in implementing the Vibrio Control Plan rule that was adopted in March 2015.

Leading the assessment, research and development of emerging Vibrio and emerging pathogen issues to help us reduce shellfish- associated illnesses.

Prioritizing illness investigations and ensuring shellfish related illnesses are properly logged, traced and filed in an accurate and timely manner.

Complete Quality Assurance Project Plans, final reports, and other deliverables for all Vibrio-related Pathogen grant funded activities.

Qualifications: Required Qualifications A Bachelor's degree or higher in Public Health, Environmental Health, or closely allied science, WHICH INCLUDES 30 semester or 45 quarter hours in a natural or physical science. Two (2) or more years (full-time equivalency) of professional experience in environmental public health and/or environmental health principles. One (1) or more years (full-time equivalency) of professional experience with interpretation and application of public health requirements and procedures relating to food safety, inspections, environmental science, or marine aquaculture. Demonstrated experience evaluating public health issues and making corrective action recommendations.
