Position Description: This position will perform public health disease surveillance work concerning the detection and control of viral hepatitis. The work involves interviewing patients and their contacts, either by phone or in the field, working with health care providers, reviewing medical records, and contacting laboratories to collect information and ensure accurate reporting of data.

Essential Duties: • Performing surveillance activities to identify viral hepatitis cases; • Reviewing and interpreting viral hepatitis test results; • Making site visits to health care sites and other facilities to investigate viral hepatitis cases; • Conducting field investigations to collect diagnostic, clinical, and risk factor data of persons suspected of having or known to have viral hepatitis, including inmates and injection drug users; • Collecting medical treatment case data from patients, providers, and medical records; • Educating patients on the causes, symptoms, effects, and treatment of the disease(s) and motivating individuals to seek medical diagnosis and treatment • Entering, reviewing, and validating viral hepatitis data in the Department’s Communicable Disease Management System; • Preparing surveillance information for inclusion in viral hepatitis registry; collecting and consolidating epidemiologic data on viral hepatitis; and • Performing related work as required.

Qualifications: Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of: • methods and techniques of disease control field investigation • interviewing techniques as they relate to disease control investigation • applicable surveillance and medical aspects of viral hepatitis diseases • patient privacy and patient confidentiality practices and guidelines

Skill in: • interviewing and eliciting sensitive information • working with individuals who are part of specific populations, including incarcerated individuals, persons who use drugs, and recent immigrants • Microsoft Office software applications and use of a personal computer

Ability to: • compile and collect data to identify public health problems • communicate well, both verbally and in writing • employ good judgment in dealing with sensitive problems • establish effective relationships with infected individuals, health care providers, and others

Education and Experience

Education • Completion of a bachelor's degree program at an accredited college or university in a public health, science, or related field

Experience • One year experience in a medical, public health, or related field is preferred.

Organization Description: Large urban health department with over 1200 employees. Division of Disease Control houses the Viral Hepatitis Program and has responsibility to receive reports of communicable diseases, investigate and manage exposures and analyze disease trends.
