Position Description: A fellowship opportunity is available in the National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, GA. The ORISE fellow will work in the Applied Research Team (ART) in the Division of TB Elimination Laboratory Branch.

The projects associated with this position will focus on two main areas: host-directed therapies and drug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis. This individual will have the opportunity to use the latest technologies to address these areas . Specific activities may include: • Performing whole genome sequencing of M. tuberculosis • Training for work in a BSL-3 laboratory environment • Performing research using animal and in vitro models • Performing immunological assays including 3D cell culture, flow cytometry and other assays as needed • Developing and validating new protocols • Keeping meticulous records and laboratory notebook • Participating in Branch and Team meetings • Maintaining communication with ART Team Lead

This fellow will be engaged with Branch leadership and technical staff. Opportunities for networking with subject matter experts will be made available. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed for an additional year upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Participants do not become employees of CDC and there are no fringe benefits paid.

Qualifications: The fellow should have a Master’s or PhD (earned within past five years) in microbiology, molecular genetics, immunology or other related discipline. Excellent oral and written communication skills are required.
