Position Description: The Health Advocacy Project (HAP), a project of the NC Justice Center, is seeking a Policy Advocate to provide strategic campaign direction and build support for the Health Advocacy Project’s health policy agenda, including coordinating work with partners and allies, managing coalitions, and leading efforts to build support for health care policies among the public, media, and thought leaders. Working in close collaboration with Health Advocacy Project staff, the Policy Advocate will lead the Project’s community and stakeholder engagement strategies, which includes planning public education activities, managing coalition efforts, and overseeing story collection activities, among other duties. The Policy Advocate also has primary responsibility for developing the Project’s external communications vision, including strategies for engaging and managing the HAP email list and database, as well as for designing an earned media and social media plan for the Project’s advocacy work.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate should have the following experience and qualifications: • Master’s degree in a related field (e.g., public policy, public health, social work) or equivalent professional training. • A minimum of three years of professional experience working in policy analysis and/or advocacy, including issue- based campaigns, organizing, or other public awareness and engagement efforts particularly with a focus on issues affecting individuals with low- and moderate-incomes. • Experience leading issue campaigns, including coalition-building, communications and messaging, and civic engagement. • Superior written and oral communication and public presentation skills for all audiences, including the ability to help produce communications materials. • Ability to work independently and collaboratively to support the work of others in a fast-paced, project-oriented organization. • Proficiency in Microsoft Office. • Demonstrated commitment to the mission of eliminating poverty through social, economic, and racial justice. • Availability to travel and work some evenings and weekends, with occasional overnight stays. • Preferred: Familiarity with health coverage programs and policy, including Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act. • Preferred: Experience leveraging social media for advocacy/policy change.
