Position Description: Long-term contract opportunity with great benefits at the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services.

The person in this position is responsible for providing health education support for site-specific activities conducted under the Cooperative Agreement between the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and the CDC Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR). This individual will also be providing health education support for the Fish Consumption Advisory Program statewide and specifically in targeted Areas of Concern. The health educator works in cooperation with other state agencies, ATSDR, the United States Environmental Protections Agency, and local health departments. The health educator will interact with the public via meetings, training events, telephone conversations, and field visits.

Qualifications: A master’s degree in a social science field, including focus areas such as communications, health communications and/or education, or environmental social science. Advanced graduate level coursework in health communications, communication theory, science writing, research design, and public relations preferred.

Basic knowledge of social science theories and models. Basic ability to convey highly technical information to the lay public through effective written and oral communication. Basic to moderate skills using Adobe Creative Suite. Some basic understanding or willingness to learn scientific principles, practices and procedures of toxicology and biology. Basic experience with the practice of compiling and summarizing highly complex scientific literature. Ability to maintain records and assist with public health assessments and consultations. Ability to prioritize and concurrently support communications need assessments and development of outreach materials for multiple complex and diverse sites.
