Position Description: This individual will serve as the Drinking Water Quality Investigation Sanitarian - Lead Worker for the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Environmental Health, Toxicology and Response Section, Drinking Water Investigation Unit. This individual will design and review drinking water sampling protocols that investigate the source of chemical contamination, oversee the implementation of drinking water sampling protocols, provide quality assurance that all aspects of collection, labeling, and delivery of samples are properly implemented, ensure analytical data are logged and managed according to established protocols, and summarize and report results as tables, graphs, figures, maps, and/or text for each sampling event. This position will serve as a lead worker to coordinate the logistics and ensure quality control of data collection for a team of environmental sanitarians 9-11 that travel to locations, collect samples, and conduct source investigations. This position will interact with the public, local health department staff, local or state building and code compliance staff, local public works staff, and contractual staff to implement remediation of in-home sources of chemical contaminants to drinking water. This position will implement budgets for conducting remediation including overseeing bid processes for plumbing replacements and purchase orders. This position will be required to maintain a DEH-HHS Elevated Blood Level Investigator certification.

Key duties of the position include: Overseeing the investigation of tap water in homes and private water supplies; developing and maintaining water sampling procedures, assist in determining the source of the contaminant and provide recommendation for preventing human exposure. Review plumbing bid, implementing purchase orders, and confirming completion of plumbing replacements. Consults with management, environmental engineers, employee representatives, and other agencies regarding drinking water safety problems and solutions. Maintains accurate and well-organized records. Prepares reports summarizing drinking water data from individual sampling events. In addition, the position will provide technical support for special projects and activities as requested by the Division or Bureau.

Qualifications: Required Education and Experience

Education Possession of a bachelor's degree in the physical or biological sciences, sanitary science, or environmental health.

Experience Three years of professional experience in the enforcement of environmental health laws equivalent to an Environmental Sanitarian, including one year equivalent to an Environmental Sanitarian P11.
