Position Description: About the Position This position reports directly to the secretary of health as part of the agency's executive team and also serves as the deputy director of the Center for Public Affairs (C4PA). This role helps direct and oversees policy, legislative, and constituent relations with primary responsibility for the department's policy, legislative, regulatory, economic analysis, and congressional and constituent relations programs. This position supervises a seasoned group of professionals that complements and supports the agency's work. You will partner with assistant secretaries, Office directors, and program staff in carrying out their policy, legislative, and rule making responsibilities. You will direct the coordination of policy development, rule development, legislative reporting, and legislative efforts across the agency and assure agency-wide analysis of issues, including the political environment. As the Director, you will represent the secretary of health and the agency to elected officials, federal, state, and local agencies, Tribes, statewide professional and advocacy organizations, health consumers, and many other stakeholders. You serve as a spokesperson for the agency in matters affecting legislation and health policy at the federal, state, and local levels. You ensure that we continue to foster health in all policies across the state of Washington. During session this position ensures bill tracking, issue spotting, and timely responses occur to best position the agency to meet our goals. You will work frequently from the capital campus, meeting with key legislative and Governor's office staff, coordinating with DOH team members and working closely with the secretary on hot issues on a daily basis. It is fast-paced and exciting. When session is over, you help support implementation of new laws and work directed to the agency and begin helping the agency build its next legislative agenda. You will work as an integrated part of the Center for Public Affairs (C4PA). The C4PA is a unique concept in state government combining traditionally separate work functions into a dynamic and collaborative team-focused environment to support our best cross-agency policy, communications, and partnership related work. DOH decided to create this new center because we believe that it will strengthen our ability to be strategic, innovative, and nimble.

Organization Description: The main DOH campus is located in Tumwater, with Public Health Laboratories located in Shoreline, and satellite offices in Richland, Kent and Spokane. DOH works with the state's 35 Local Health Jurisdictions, 29 federally recognized Tribes, and State Board of Health to deliver public health services to the people of Washington State. Together these entities make up the decentralized public health system. This system is characterized by strong relationships and shared leadership.
