Position Description: The Illinois Department of Public Health, Office of Health Protection, has an opening for a Division Chief within the Division of Environmental Health. This individual plans, organizes and directs the statewide staff within the Division, including Regional Engineers and Section Chiefs. Serves as policy-making official for the agency’s Environmental Health program and speaks on behalf of the Director. Proposes and interprets new legislation; establishes and approves short and long-term program goals and objectives; proposes administrative rules and implements the Division budget.

Qualifications: The successful candidate will demonstrate knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of four years of college, preferably with courses in environmental health and related fields; requires four years of administrative experience in the management of environmental health or related programs; requires ability to develop and maintains cooperative working relationships; Licensed Professional Engineer preferred. Requires professional certification as a Licensed Environmental Health Practitioner. Requires excellent computer skills and work experience in word processing and spreadsheet applications (i.e., Word, Excel, Power-point).

Organization Description: The mission of IDPH is to promote health through the prevention and control of disease and injury. And the agency has been doing just that since it was first organized in 1877 with a staff of three and a two-year budget of $5,000. IDPH, which is one of the state's oldest agencies, now has an annual budget of about $325 million in state and federal funds, headquarters in Springfield and Chicago, seven regional offices located around the state, three laboratories and 1,100 employees. The Department is organized into six offices, each of which addresses a distinct area of public health. Each office operates and supports numerous ongoing programs and is prepared to respond to extraordinary situations as they arise.
