Position Description: The Metro Public Health Department is seeking a Director for the Bureau of Communicable Diseases and Emergency Preparedness. This experienced public health leader will have a strong background in control of communicable diseases, as well as demonstrated success as a manager and leader. Position Description: Leads and directs the Bureau of Communicable Disease and Emergency Preparedness (CDEP). Sets vision and standards, supervises Program Managers responsible for STD/HIV Prevention and Intervention, TB Elimination, Immunizations, Notifiable Disease, Public Health Emergency Preparedness (PHEP), and Safety. Monitors performance of Bureau programs. Advises and provides information about Bureau operations and direction to Director of Health, Executive Leadership Team and other professional staff. Ensures surveillance systems are effective and useful; ensures that public health threats and emergencies are promptly investigated and addressed. Utilizes surveillance, program, and evaluation data to guide strategic planning, drive decision-making, and to guide the overall direction of the Bureau within the larger public health system. Assures quality in the outcomes and services provided; evaluates effectiveness of programs and operations within Bureau; ensures quality improvement processes are in place, and ensures results are reported and communicated. Communicates and consults regularly and effectively with internal and external stakeholders, including Tennessee Department of Health, CDC, and local health care organizations, and supports public communication efforts by the department. Oversees and leads efforts to prepare grants and generate revenue in pursuit of Bureau goals. Ensures CDEP Bureau has a trained and competent workforce through effective hiring, training, and professional development activities. Supports MPHD organizational expectations by modeling core values of Professionalism, Respect, Integrity, Dedication, and Equity; actively and collaboratively participating on the Executive Leadership Team and working groups as appropriate.

Qualifications: Graduation from an accredited college or university and five (5) years of progressively responsible full-time paid employment required. Four (4) years must have been in a public administration /supervisory capacity. Completed graduate degree in a directly related field may be substituted for one (1) year of the required experience. Demonstrated success as a manager, administrator, leader and team builder required. Submission of current resume is required.

Candidates with accreditations earned in a foreign institute are encouraged to apply, however at the present time MPHD is not sponsoring individuals through any of the US Government’s employment-based immigration programs. Valid class “D” driver’s license, use of personal vehicle, and maintenance of valid personal vehicle insurance as required by Tennessee Law. Preferred Education and Experience Master’s degree in public health, public administration, business or other appropriate health or social services related field from an accredited college or university. Experience with applied epidemiology including public health surveillance systems and outbreak investigation, program planning and evaluation. Ability to articulate and explain the principles and practice of communicable disease control. Familiarity with clinical services and field interventions for TB and STD. While not required, candidates with a doctoral degree in an applicable area (e. g. MD, DVM, Ph.D.) are encouraged to apply. Cultural competency and ability to engage different communities. Position requires outstanding management skills and substantial experience as a public health leader who values diversity, equity and inclusion.
