JOB TITLE: Microbiologist I

IHRC, Inc. provides scientific, information management, management consulting, bioinformatics, and administrative program support to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other Federal and private sector clients.  The successful candidate will be a full-time employee of IHRC, Inc. and will be assigned to the Polio and Picornavirus Laboratory Branch (PPLB), Division of Viral Diseases (DVD), National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD), at the CDC, 1600 Clifton Road, Atlanta, GA, to provide scientific and technical support for the PPLB.  


The Microbiologist I will provide support for the development of protocols for various research projects involved in characterizing immune responses to poliovirus and other non-polio Enteroviruses.  


  • Employ methods including virus neutralization assays and quality control standard measurements to perform antibody measurements by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays and/or neutralization using the World Health Organization (WHO)-standard assay developed at CDC.
  • Process human or animal specimens for antibody measurements by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) and/or neutralization using CDC-standard assays.
  • Develop virus stock preparations protocols.
  • Develop virus titration protocols.
  • Develop virus neutralization assays protocols.
  • Develop enzyme linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) protocols.
  • Develop quality control standard measurements.
  • Develop flow cytometry protocols for various research projects involved in immune responses to poliovirus and other non-polio Enteroviruses including but not limited to:
    • Prepare and stain specimens from in vitro and in vivo experiments as well as human specimens using appropriate protocols for analysis on a BD FACS Calibur, or equivalent cytometer
    • Perform analysis of raw data from cytometers on FlowJo v10, or equivalent software, and summarize for technical review
    • Perform required maintenance of the flow cytometer for continued system performance
  • Develop ELISpot protocols for various research projects involved in immune responses to poliovirus and other non-polio Enteroviruses including but not limited to:
    • Perform virus stock preparation and purification
    • Perform virus titration
    • Perform virus inactivation by chemical or radioactive methods and antigen quantitation
    • Prepare lymphocyte specimens from animals or human donors for analysis
    • Use an ELISpot reader instrument to collect data
  • Summarize data for technical monitor review
  • Prepare reports, charts and graphs and present data at internal laboratory meetings



Education and experience:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Genetics or appropriate life science with at least 24 semester hours in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry or related disciplines appropriate to the position being filled.


  • Must have proof of immunizations for Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella Zoster Virus, Hepatitis B and Polio Virus
  • Experience with standard molecular and microbiological techniques
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Documentation of daily work with good laboratory practice compliance
  • Experience writing project reports, research protocols and manuscripts  


  • Advanced degree in a scientific discipline
  • Experience with the development and evaluation and optimization of in vitro diagnostic assays, including immunoassays
  • Experience with Mammalian cell culture and transfection, virus infection and Real-time PCR
  • Experience accessioning and maintaining inventory of samples using MS Excel and Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
  • Experience working in a similar capacity in a Public Health setting and/or Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) laboratory setting
  • Ability to work and build coalitions with partners involved, and develop strategies for effectively convey information to partners
  • Ability to work independently and yet to maintain the flexibility to respond to requests for support of ongoing projects

Language Skills:

  • The candidate must possess excellent oral and written communication skills in English   


  • Must be United States citizen or permanent resident or have authorization for employment in the United States
