IHRC, Inc. provides scientific, information management, management consulting, bioinformatics, and administrative program support to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other Federal and private sector clients.  The successful candidate will be a full-time employee of IHRC, Inc. and will be assigned to the Microbial Pathogenesis and Immune Response (MPIR) Laboratory, Meningitis and Vaccine Preventable Diseases Branch (MVPDB), Division of Bacterial Diseases (DBD), National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD), at the CDC, 1600 Clifton Road, Atlanta, GA, to provide scientific and technical support for the MPIR.  

SCOPE OF WORK

The Microbiologist will provide support for (i) the development and validation of in vitro diagnostic tests for detection of bacterial infections and development of immune correlates of protection, and (ii) technical and intellectual support for assay development, preparation and evaluation of standards, and quality controls and Quality Assurance materials for detection and quantification of bacterial antigens and antibodies reactive against specific components of infectious organisms.  

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist in the accessioning, maintenance and database management of clinical and non-clinical specimens to support studies of vaccines and diagnostics for a range of vaccine preventable diseases including pertussis.
  • Assist in the development and optimization of in vitro assays to measure biological responses to vaccination and infection in human or animal specimens.
  • Maintain eukaryotic cell cultures and cell lines; prepare cell banks and working cell stocks, and cell plates. Receive training for a variety of techniques and participate in research projects.
  • Manage and coordinate a variety of special projects (domestic and global) within the Branch.
  • Participate in collaborative studies, training and Quality Control/Quality Assurance (QC/QA) programs designed to promote technology transfer of diagnostic assays and harmonization among laboratories.
  • Collaborate on the development and validation of novel diagnostic and typing techniques for Bordetella species.
  • Comply with Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) regulations and maintain assigned laboratory areas, equipment and protocols in compliance with local and federal requirements for quality, safety and security.
  • Perform molecular and immunological methods.
  • Maintain laboratory databases and perform specimen management.
  • Liaise between CDC and laboratory supply companies in order to verify delivery of equipment.
  • Perform assays as needed during pertussis outbreak response.
  • Arrange for repair of laboratory equipment as needed.
  • Keep accurate reports on contractual renewals for laboratory equipment maintenance agreements.
  • Prepare service contract documents.
  • Review and order lab supplies for the meningitis and pertussis team.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's or higher degree in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent.

Required:  

  • Experience with standard molecular and microbiological techniques
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Documentation of daily work with good laboratory practice compliance
  • Experience writing project reports, research protocols and manuscripts  

Desirable:

  • Advanced degree in a scientific discipline
  • Knowledge of Nisseria, meningitis and pertussis protocols and techniques
  • Experience with the development and evaluation and optimization of in vitro diagnostic assays, including immunoassays
  • Experience with eukaryotic cell culture and maintenance of cell lines
  • Knowledge of Quality Management Systems (QMS) and Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) as related to laboratory protocols and procedures
  • Experience maintaining inventory of samples using MS Excel and Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
  • Experience working in a similar capacity in a Public Health setting
  • Ability to work and build coalitions with partners involved, and develop strategies for effectively convey information to partners
  • Ability to work independently and yet to maintain the flexibility to respond to requests for support of ongoing projects
  • Knowledge of basic statistical analysis and analysis of laboratory data

Language Skills:

  • The candidate must possess excellent oral and written communication skills in English
