Position Description: Temple University’s College of Public Health is leading a new movement to reimagine the future of public health. Through transdisciplinary research and interprofessional education, our students, staff and faculty embrace public health as a catalyst for individual and community change in pursuit of the common good. We seek a creative and visionary Chair for the Department of Health Services Administration and Policy who is devoted to innovation and entrepreneurship in shaping research and educational programs.

Qualifications. The ideal candidate will have a strong record of scholarship and external research funding, in addition to being an accomplished administrator capable of developing and advancing a department. She or he should be skilled at relationship building in the pursuit of recruiting and retaining new career and established faculty researchers as well as supporting the professional growth of teaching faculty, graduate students and staff. Additional critical skills beyond personnel management include budgeting and program development. The candidate should demonstrated commitment to transdisciplinary research and interprofessional education.

Candidates should hold a doctorate in Public Health, Economics, Public Policy, Health Informatics or aligned disciplines. We welcome candidates with established research in these disciplines and those studying other critical national health challenges, including substance abuse, chronic disease, and policy issues affecting children and families. The Department. Established in 2015, the Department of Health Services Administration and Policy is comprised of accredited academic programs in Health Policy and Management, and Health Informatics and Information Management. There are 12 faculty engaged in teaching, research, and entrepreneurial activities with more than 200 students. Programs include an MPH in Health Policy and Management with concentrations in Health Policy and Healthcare Leadership; a BS in Health Information Management and MS and Graduate Certificate in Health Informatics; and a PhD in Health Policy. The Department also contributes to the College’s BS in Public Health. The research and policy emphases are in the areas of quality of care, healthcare costs and financing; access to care; and the impact of health information technologies.

? The College. The Department of Health Services Administration and Policy is one of 9 CPH academic units enrolling 4,600 students in in 8 undergraduate and 28 graduate degree programs. The College, fully accredited by the Council on Education in Public Health as a school of public health, has seen remarkable growth and organizational expansion in configuration of programs, interprofessional education, research funding, and interdisciplinary collaboration. The Department is an active participant in the College’s research portfolio that includes behavioral, social and environmental inquiries, medical interventions, and basic science. Particular research strengths include obesity, cancer, mental health, aphasia and other language disorders, HIV/AIDS, organ and tissue donation, and aging. In addition, a new Center focused on Community Engaged Research and Practice is being launched.

The College has the highest level of extramural funding per faculty member and second highest amount of total research dollars among the 17 schools and colleges at Temple University. Much of this research support comes from the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, Department of Defense as well as a wide range of foundations. CPH faculty collaborate with the Center for Public Health Law Research, the Center for Obesity Research and Education, Fox Chase Cancer Center, the Temple University Health System and other area health care systems.

The University. Temple University is an urban, research-intensive Carnegie R1 university located in historic and culturally rich Philadelphia, the nation’s 6th largest city. The city was ranked 3rd by the New York Times as a world tourist destination. The National Science Foundation ranks Temple among the top 100 universities in the country for research expenditures. Temple is the 6th largest provider of professional education in the nation and includes Schools of Medicine, Pharmacy, Podiatry, Law, and Dentistry in addition to research centers including the NCI-designated Fox Chase Cancer Center.
