IHRC, Inc. provides scientific, information management, management consulting, bioinformatics, and administrative program support to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other Federal and private sector clients.  The successful candidate will be a full- time employee of IHRC, Inc. and will be assigned to the Streptococcus Laboratory, Respiratory Diseases Branch (RDB), Division of Bacterial Diseases (DBD), at the CDC, 1600 Clifton Road, Atlanta, GA to provide scientific and laboratory technical support services for RDB.

SCOPE OF WORK

The Microbiologist IV will be assigned to the Streptococcus Laboratory, RDB, DBD to provide scientific and laboratory technical support for the Branch for the isolation, identification, and characterization of bacterial isolates to aide in the control of antimicrobial resistant bacteria. Responsibilities will include providing support services for molecular and serologic diagnosis, molecular subtyping including genome-based typing systems, and genomic analysis of pathogenic bacteria (specifically pneumococci and other streptococcal species).  Additionally, the candidate will participate in activities to support the design, development, and implementation of laboratory methods and activities to improve the detection and characterization of pathogenic bacteria. The candidate will also support the Streptococcus Laboratory team to ensure successful progress in the work analysis and accomplishing team objectives.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide laboratory support for the generation of bacterial genomic libraries for next genomic sequencing.
  • Perform next generation high- throughput sequencing sample preparation using the Sciclone NGSx platform.
  • Perform next generation sequencing using the Illumina MiSeq platform.
  • Perform serotyping and antimicrobial susceptibility testing of isolates for detection of pathogenic bacteria (pneumococci and other streptococcal species).
  • Perform PCR-based testing of pathogenic bacteria.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • M.S. degree in molecular biology or microbiology or related field. Ph.D. preferred.

Required:

  • Minimum of 3 years of laboratory experience using molecular, immunological, and cell biology techniques.
  • Knowledge and experience with microbial next generation sequencing data analysis 
  • Experience performing traditional molecular techniques on BSL-2 agents.
  • Experience working with next generation sequencing platforms (Illumina, PacBio) 
  • Proficiency with different technologies for the generation of bacterial genomic libraries for next generation sequencing with Illumina instruments.
  • Expert knowledge and ability to perform molecular and immunological methods such as ELISA, multiplex -bead based assays, polymerase nucleic acid amplification, gene sequencing, basic gene cloning techniques, gene expression, bacterial growth & plasmid transformation, animal models, and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis.

Desirable:  

  • Demonstrate skills and experience writing project, reports, research protocols and manuscripts. 
  • Ability to work and build coalition with partners involved, working with RDB team members and developing strategies for effectively conveying information to partners. 
  • Ability to work independently and yet to maintain the flexibility to respond to the needs of the RDB.
  • Possess sufficient computer literacy to use applications including Microsoft Office, Access, Excel, PowerPoint, Bionumerics and statistical software.

Language Skills:

  • The candidate must possess excellent oral and written communication skills in English
