Position Description: The Intramural Research Department at the American Cancer Society National Home Office seeks an Intern with Geospatial Information Systems development experience for a part-time position with the Statistics & Evaluation Center. The Intern will provide support to geospatial related data gathering, analysis and development of decision support tools. Successful candidate should have experience with both desktop and web GIS platforms.

Major Responsibilities: • Manage and manipulate geospatial and other data in preparation for decision support tool development and online mapping tools. • Develop, test and validate scripts in GIS systems (Arc GIS desktop/online, instantAtlas, Google API and others) under the supervision of the Scientific Director, Geospatial research. • Other tasks as directed by the Scientific Director, Geospatial Research.

Qualifications: • This is an intern position, targeted to students or graduates with backgrounds in GIS data management and programming. • Coursework in Social Sciences, Health Services, Statistics, Engineering, Geography, Geodesy, Regional Planning or associated discipline where education in and use of GIS is a major component of the educational degree program.

Knowledge & Skills: • Experience with GIS desktop and web applications. • Strong GIS programming skills, preferably in ARC. • Knowledge and/or experiences with cancer and/or chronic disease prevention, cancer survivorship, behavioral sciences, and health desired. • Knowledge of R, SPSS, JMP or SAS statistical analysis software a plus. • Facility with a modern word processing system, Microsoft Word® preferred, as implemented in a Microsoft Windows® computing environment. • Strong technical skills and able to deliver products on a timely basis while working independently under supervision of senior staff.

All Interns Must meet the following requirements: •Full-time student, If you are an undergraduate student you have completed your freshman year of college; •Have a minimum of a B average (cumulative 3.0 on 4.0 scale); •Plan to continue their education in the following term/semester oNote: an internship assignment may coincide with the student’s last term/trimester, but student must disengage upon graduation.

The following information must be submitted upon application: •Resume •Two references from academic/professional sources addressing the student’s credentials based on the internship’s skill requirements •Recent transcript attesting to their GPA and standing as a full-time student •Unpaid interns must also provide documentation of the participation in a bona-fide college intern program under which their ACS internship either qualifies them to receive course credit OR fulfills a graduation/coursework requirement.
