Position Description: : The successful candidate will work within our CONSERVE Center of Excellence in the laboratory of Dr. Amy R. Sapkota. S/he will work on the CONSERVE Microbiology, Chemistry, Environmental Health and Engineering Team that is characterizing the microbial, chemical and physical quality of nontraditional irrigation water using both culture-based methods and culture-independent, next- generation sequencing approaches. The team is also evaluating the effectiveness of on-farm water treatment technologies in removing microbial, chemical and physical contaminants from nontraditional irrigation water sources. The specific work will involve on-farm field sampling, standard microbiological analyses, DNA extractions, PCR assays, 16S rRNA sequencing and bioinformatic analysis, and extensive collaboration with our multidisciplinary team that is located across multiple institutions and states. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to hone their leadership and grant-writing skills by developing and directing pilot studies leveraging off of the work of CONSERVE and using the data generated in this work to develop grant proposals.

Qualifications: Applicants must possess a PhD in the life sciences (e.g. Environmental Health Sciences, Biology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Microbial Ecology, Food Safety, Bioinformatics, etc.). In addition to the degree, applicants should have at least two years of laboratory experience (at the pre-doctoral level) in microbiology and molecular biology-based techniques, demonstrated experience with next- generation sequencing approaches, excellent organizational and communication skills (oral and written), and enthusiasm for multidisciplinary collaborations. The ideal candidate will have a combination of microbiology and molecular biology skills, experience conducting field and laboratory studies focused on microbial water quality, knowledge of exposure assessment, and experience processing next-generation sequencing datasets and performing bioinformatic analyses using standard analysis tools such as Qiime and R.

Organization Description: The Maryland Institute for Applied Environmental Health within the University of Maryland, School of Public Health is seeking a highly motivated individual for the grants and contracts funded post of Postdoctoral Fellow. This individual will join our USDA NIFA-funded Center, “CONSERVE: A Center of Excellence at the Nexus of Sustainable Water Reuse, Food and Health (http://conservewaterforfood.org/).” The long?term goal of CONSERVE is to facilitate the adoption of transformative on?farm solutions that enable the safe use of nontraditional irrigation water (e.g. reclaimed water, return flows) on food crops.
