Position Description: The Statistical Research Specialist (SRS) will work under general supervision under the Division of Vital Records and Statistics (VRS), Office of Vital Statistics, State of Tennessee Department of Health. The SRS is responsible for professional statistical analytic and programming work of considerable difficulty, data quality evaluation, and related work as required. Candidates for this position should be competent in technical learning, time management, collaboration, and perseverance. Candidates should be knowledgeable in administration and management, computers and electronics, customer and personal service, written, visual and oral communication, and statistics. They should have skills and abilities in listening, critical thinking, monitoring, reading comprehension, speaking, writing, reading comprehension, deductive/inductive reasoning, mathematical reasoning, coordination, complex problem solving, programming, quality control analysis, troubleshooting, and time management. Job responsibilities include: Using statistical software (especially Statistical Analysis Systems (SAS)) to analyze event and population data; producing data summary reports, factsheets, and infographics for reporting purposes; assisting VRS with other descriptive and inferential analyses, as requested; demonstrating good customer service to colleagues and clients through effective communication and timely project completion; supervising other analysts and programmers to achieve Division objectives.

Qualifications: Education and Experience: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master's degree in statistics, applied statistics, social or behavioral sciences, health sciences, business, business administration, or public policy and experience equivalent to two years full-time professional work developing research methodology and/or directing statistical research. Graduate education may be substituted for experience. Graduate course work credit received from an accredited college or university in statistics or computer science may substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis to a maximum of two years (e.g., 36 graduate quarter hours in one of a combination of the above listed fields may substitute for one year of the required experience). Experience may be substituted for graduate education. Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in statistics, applied statistics, social or behavioral sciences, health sciences, business, business administration, or public policy and experience equivalent to five years full-time professional work developing research methodology and/or directing statistical research. Desired qualifications: Master’s degree with a concentration in an applied statistical field, such as biostatistics, epidemiology, data science; experience performing data analyses using statistical software, preferably SAS; SAS certification (basic or advanced); computer skills: Microsoft Office suite, Excel, Publisher, Adobe; experience with event data analysis and evaluation; experience with time management working multiple concurrent analyses and deadlines; strong oral and written communication skills; experience working in a team environment to accomplish team projects; some travel may be required.
