Position Description: The Epidemiologist 1 (EPI 1) will work under general supervision under the Division of Vital Records and Statistics (VRS), Office of Vital Statistics, State of Tennessee Department of Health. The EPI 1 is responsible for professional scientific and epidemiological assessment of considerable difficulty, health program evaluation, and related work as required. Candidates for this position should be competent in technical learning, time management, collaboration, and perseverance. Candidates should be knowledgeable in evaluation and consultation, computers and electronics, customer and personal service, written, visual and oral communication, and statistics. They should have skills and abilities in listening, critical thinking, monitoring, reading comprehension, speaking, writing, reading comprehension, deductive/inductive reasoning, mathematical reasoning, coordination, complex problem solving, programming, quality control analysis, troubleshooting, and time management. Job responsibilities include: Using statistical software (especially Statistical Analysis Systems (SAS)) to analyze event and population data; producing data summary reports, factsheets, and infographics for reporting purposes; assisting VRS with other descriptive and inferential analyses, as requested; demonstrating good customer service to colleagues and clients through effective communication and timely project completion; consulting and advising VRS and Vital Statistics data users on data attributes, research methodology, and interpretation.

Qualifications: Desired qualifications: Master’s degree in epidemiology, biostatistics, or informatics, or a Master’s of Public Health degree with a concentration in one of these fields; experience performing data analyses using statistical software, preferably SAS; SAS certification (basic or advanced); computer skills: Microsoft Office suite, Excel, Publisher, Adobe; experience with event and/or population data analysis and evaluation; experience with time management working multiple concurrent analyses and deadlines; strong oral and written communication skills; experience working in a team environment to accomplish team projects; some travel may be required.

Degrees must be from an accredited college or university.

A transcript is required to qualify for this position (at least 45 quarter hours of relevant graduate-level work and evidence of degree completion).

A transcript evaluation is required for degrees earned outside of the United States.

Must be eligible to work in the U.S.
