Position Description: Do you have expertise in state and local codes relating to on-site sewage system development projects or permitting processes? Join our team in On-Site as an Environmental Health Specialist III, Technical Lead. This is a regular, full- time (1.0 FTE) position.

Some of what you'll do: •Conducting field and office reviews of plan applications, both at the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department and at Pierce County Planning and Public Works. •Providing technical oversight for employees involved in conducting field and office reviews of plan applications including but not limited to on-site disposal systems, repairs, plats and land development applications, commercial applications, soil consultations, etc •Providing second opinions on technical staff application reviews. •Participating in workshops and industry meetings. •Assisting in the operation of the Key Peninsula Office. •Assisting in drafting and implementing codes and ordinances. •Training of Environmental Health staff on policies and procedures for office and field work. •Assisting with technical staff workload management. •Composing reports, public health advisory information and public relations materials for education and dissemination to the public. •Assisting with program planning and evaluation, and development of policies and procedures. •Assisting in monitoring grants and program budgets.

What you bring to the table: •Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of environmental health. •Knowledge of and the ability to apply math and science applications to environmental health work. •Skill in analyzing, compiling, recording and assessing data, i.e., legal proceedings, technical oversight. •Skill in planning, organizing and leading work activities to meet established objectives. •Skill in communicating effectively within a sometimes stressful environment. •Ability to provide technical expertise to staff through coaching, mentoring and training. •Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse population of clients, community-based agencies, and departmental personnel. •Ability to interpret and apply federal, state, and local laws and regulations. •Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with tact, diplomacy, and sensitivity. •Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Qualifications: A Bachelor's Degree in environmental science, public health or a closely related field; and four years of relevant environmental health experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Possession of a current Certificate of Registration as a Sanitarian (RS) or a Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) is required within six months of hire.•Ability to successfully pass a background investigation. •Possession of a valid driver's license and an acceptable driver's abstract is required prior to employment. •Positions assigned to On-site Sewage System Design and Inspection requires the possession of a current State of Washington Wastewater Treatment System Inspector license within in two years of hire.
