Purpose: The mission of the Bureau of Epide Epidemiology and Population Health, MDHHS, is to is to promote and protect the health, welln wellness, and safety of all Michigan resid residents. Support is needed to assist local and s and state public health investigators in their their response to infectious disease outbr outbreaks, e.g., the hepatitis A outbreak that that Michigan has been experiencing since Augus August 2016. This position will work along alongside central MDHHS subject matter exper experts and with existing local health depar department staff in communicable disease, immun immunization, communication outreach, and emerg emergency preparedness staff to coordinate outbr outbreak response activities.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Epidemiology: • Monitor statewide surveillance and l laboratory systems daily for outbreak cases a and for trends in disease activity • Coordinate outbreak response with the local health departments, state subject matter experts, and other partners to ensure appropriate and timely follow-up of cases a and contacts • Assist with conducting interviews w with case patients • Liaise with other federal, state, a and local partners on disease activity • Provide subject matter expertise in t the form of epidemiologic consultation and s support to local health departments and p providers as needed • Conduct data analyses for weekly r reports and other data requests • Participate in state-level p preparedness activities to respond to any p public health emergency; contribute to the u updating of emergency operations and all h hazards plans • Report/update on a regular basis to S Supervisor • Maintain a positive, credible, pro professional relationship with all parties rel relevant to projects, and represent the best int interest of MPHI and MDHHS at all times
Communications • Prepare outbreak data summaries as r requested • Provide outbreak updates for n national and statewide teleconference calls, m meetings, and conferences • Identify and contact local clinical l laboratories on a weekly basis to ensure t that reportable disease cases have been r reported to public health and that clinical s specimens have been sent to the MDHHS Bureau o of Laboratories • Liaise with community and partners as point person for disease-related issues in in the community
Qualifications / Requirements: Master’s degr degree with a major in epidemiology or in publ public health with a minimum of 12 combined grad graduate level term hours or 8 semester hour hours in epidemiology and biostatistics.
Experience: Two years working as an ep epidemiologist or equivalent preferred.
Important Skills and Characteristics: Knowledge of infectious disease epidemiology. Proficient in working with large data sets, Microsoft Office applications, such as Access, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and is familiar with email/internet browser software. Works well in team situations, is self-motivated, meets de deadlines, and handles multiple tasks at one ti time with minimal supervision. Must possess ex excellent oral and written communication sk skills and be able to present scientific and te technical information to audiences.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements: Standard office environment. Valid motor vehicle operator’s license may be required t to perform duties of the position.
