Position Description: Vacancy #: 000363 Recruitment Range: Commensurate with Qualifications Closing Date: Open Until Filled Organizational Unit Overview The Department of Public Health of the Brody School of Medicine, East Carolina University (ECU) invites applicants for an Assistant Professor, twelve-month, tenure- track faculty position in Epidemiology. ECU is a constituent of the University of North Carolina system and classified as a Doctoral/Research-Intensive University. Located in Greenville, North Carolina, ECU is the third largest of the 17-campus University of North Carolina system. The Department of Public Health offers a Masters of Public Health (MPH) degree program accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH), with over 100 students enrolled. The Department recently began offering a DrPH degree with concentrations in Environmental and Occupational Health and Health Policy, Administration and Leadership. ECU has been approved to launch a School of Rural Public Health in August 2020. The Department of Public Health is committed to educating professionals and conducting research to improve the health of communities in our region and beyond. We practice a combination of scientific and social approaches to reduce disease and systematically address the multiple determinants of health. Our work is rooted in strong partnerships with the community, health and social services, industry and business, academia, and the media. The Department of Public Health has a robust research portfolio and provides opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration with clinical faculty in the Schools of Medicine and Dentistry and Colleges of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences, as well as several other Schools and programs across the university. Collaborative research with clinical faculty at the East Carolina Heart Institute and Vidant Cancer Care is encouraged. ECU has strong community-based collaborations with clinics, health departments, and non-profit organizations in eastern North Carolina with the mission to reduce health disparities in under- served populations. ECU seeks to attract a culturally and academically diverse faculty of the highest caliber, skilled in scholarship, teaching, and the integration of knowledge. Job Duties Duties: The successful candidate will teach in the MPH program, mentor students, conduct investigator-initiated research, and provide university, professional, and community service, consistent with tenure- track faculty members at ECU. Essential Job Requirements: • Perform research or other creative activities that contribute to the academic field of public health and epidemiology, • Perform all tasks necessary to conduct and complete scheduled instructional activities and assessment, • Advise and mentor students regarding academic progress and professional development in public health, • Participate in university and community activities, especially as related to rendering academic and community service, • Plan, organize, and conduct meetings. Minimum Education/Experience • Qualifications: Candidate must have a doctorate (PhD, DrPH, ScD, etc.) in Epidemiology, preferably from an Accredited School of Public Health. • Demonstration of excellence in and commitment to teaching epidemiology is essential (including methods and quantitative data analysis to masters, doctoral, medical students, residents, and/or fellows). • Demonstrated ability to assimilate information, reason logically, and communicate effectively with students and colleagues. • Documented experience working on teams. • Demonstration of a strong quantitative background in design and analysis of observational and intervention studies (clinical or community-based trials), a consistent record of peer- reviewed publications, and a research agenda (established or aspirational) are required. Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education Preference will be given to candidates with a research and teaching focus in the epidemiology of chronic diseases, including cardiovascular, cancer, and other chronic conditions.
