Purpose: This position will be housed in the Chronic Disease Epidemiology Section (CDES), which is in the Lifecourse Epidemiology and Genomics Division of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and will be supervised by the CDES Manager. This position will provide informatics program support to the Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention (HDSP) Unit and the Diabetes and Other Chronic Diseases (DOCD) Unit, both of which are in the Division of Chronic Disease and Injury Control at MDHHS. This position will work to primarily enhance capacity between data and information systems and to facilitate data processing and analysis for chronic disease programs. This includes support for specific disease surveillance systems and electronic messaging used by MDHHS and its partners.
Duties and Responsibilities:

Duties and Responsibilities: • Support the development and m maintenance of chronic disease surveillance s systems at MDHHS. • Support HL7 electronic messaging e efforts, including providing feedback to m message submitters and troubleshooting m message issues with production providers. • Support the exploration of how existing IT infrastructure and standards (e.g., CPT codes; ICD-10 codes; HL7 Admission, Discharge and Transfer messages (ADTs) and Continuity of Care Document messages (CCDs)) can be leveraged to identify diagnoses of pre-diabetes and other c chronic diseases. • Assist in the planning and design of a a strategy for querying new and existing d data flows to determine prevalence of p patients with undiagnosed hypertension. • Assist in the identification of m methods to collect and consolidate existing i information, such as diagnosis codes, lab r results, or treatment plans for a patient f from messages that are transported through t the Michigan Health Information Network ( (MiHIN). • Assist in the development of a system to query MiHIN for near real-time surveillance of chronic diseases, such as hypertension, undiagnosed hypertension, blood cholesterol, and pre-diabetes. • Collaborate with experts and partners in the development of MDHHS and, if relevant, chronic disease-specific standards a and guidance, based on system requirements a and national guidelines and standards. F Formulate and improve procedures for e evaluating test data feeds. • Monitor data flows and investigate a any irregularities. • Coordinate with other informatics s staff in the Bureau of Epidemiology and P Population Health, MDHHS, to assist in d designing and testing new system features to c chronic disease surveillance systems. • Performs other duties as assigned. • Maintain a positive, strong, cred credible, professional and interpersonal rela relationship with all parties of relevant MPHI MPHI projects and represent the best inte interest of MPHI at all times.
Education: Possession of a bachelor’s degree with a major in public health, epidemiology, informatics, computer science or another computer-related field is required. Master’s degree with a conc concentration in any of these would be pref preferred.
Experience: Previous public health in informatics or system support knowledge an and/or experience is highly desired.
Important Skills and Characteristics: Candidates should possess excellent oral and written communication skills and have the ability to work well in team situations. Candidates should also be self-motivated, able t able to complete work in timely manner and handle handle multiple tasks on time with minimal superv supervision. Candidate should be familiar with c with common health messaging standards, such as HL7 as HL7.
