Position Description: General Position Summary.

The Department of Quantitative Health Sciences (QHS) at the University of Massachusetts Medical School (UMMS) is seeking a highly motivated full-time research assistant (40 hours a week) to support a project using qualitative study design beginning January 2019. The research assistant will primarily work with the principal investigators and PhD students in Clinical & Population Health Research program to coordinate, and assist in conducting, and analyzing qualitative focus group and interview data. This position requires strong organizational and writing skills and the ability to collaborate and implement project work plans and detail orientation. Primary tasks would include assisting in qualitative data collection, preparation and analysis; literature reviews; site visits; survey instrument design; note- taking; preparation of draft documents and presentations; and coordination of work among project team members. Research Assistants may travel with project teams and may have the opportunity to contribute to reports and articles. Opportunities to conduct complimentary quantitative studies available. The research assistant may also have the opportunity to contribute to peer-reviewed publications after the study is complete.

Specific Responsibilities.

Assist with conducting focus group. Conduct in-depth interviews according to pre-defined protocols: The research assistant will assist with collecting informed consents and demographic surveys, taking observational notes, keeping time, and running recording equipment according to the qualitative data collection protocol. Assist with qualitative data analysis: The research assistant will work with other team members to code qualitative data using a computer software program called NVivo in accordance with a predefined coding protocol. Maintain records: Keep track of patients consent form, assist in data collection during the process of focus group and in- depth interviews, and organize files on a shared drive in accordance with confidentiality safeguards. Attend research team meetings: Including bi-weekly meetings with clinical sites and weekly meeting at UMMS. Provide administrative support to the team (coordinating travel, focus group preparatory work, etc.). This position may require some travel in the continental United States (anticipated to be no more than 5 trips over 9 months with each trip no more than 3 days).

Qualifications: Successful candidates will have experience with qualitative and quantitative research methods. Successful candidates will be thoughtful, thorough, disciplined researchers who are able to work simultaneously on multiple deliverables and meet deadlines. Applicants should have excellent research and analysis skills demonstrated in coursework or work experience; solid qualitative research skills; the ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing; strong writing skills and the ability to work effectively as a member of multi-disciplinary teams.

Specific Desired Skills and Qualities.

Recent graduate MPH students and those with bachelor’s degrees and research experience are encouraged to apply. Familiarity or experience with qualitative research methods, experience conducting qualitative interviews, focus groups, and experience using qualitative data analysis software (e.g., NVivo) preferred. Experience with SAS and REDcap is also desired.
