Purpose: This position is responsible for providing health education support for the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services’ (MDHHS) Fish Consumption Advisory Pro Program in the Metro Detroit area, in par partnership with the Friends of the Detroit Riv River (FDR).
Duties and Responsibilities: • Collaborates with the MDHHS health e educator, Friends of the Detroit River, and o other community partners to identify events s suitable for promotion of the Eat Safe Fish p program in the Detroit area. • Provide Eat Safe Fish health e education at events such as fishing derbies a and health fairs. • Identify other stakeholders, h healthcare professionals, and partners s suitable for distribution of health e education on the Eat Safe Fish program. • Distribute materials to anglers f fishing the Detroit River and other local w waterbodies, bait shops, and other d distribution points. • Coordinates the Detroit River Walker program (seasonal) including coordination of two part-time staff. • Communicate information on cleanup e efforts and environmental solutions relevant t to the Detroit River. • Provides tracking and accountability f for project activities. • Maintains a positive, strong, c credible, professional and interpersonal r relationship with all parties relevant to M MDHHS and FDR projects, and represents the b best interest of MDHHS, MPHI, and FDR at all t times. • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications/Requirements Education: Equivalent to a high school diploma; associate’s, bachelor’s, or master’s degree preferred Experience: Experience is not required for th this position. However, educational and pr professional experience will be considered in in determining starting salary. Important Skills and Characteristics: • Excellent oral and written c communication skills are important, e especially the ability to convey technical i information to the public. • Computer skills in Microsoft Word a and Outlook (Calendar and Email). • Must be able to work independently. • Professional demeanor required. • Knowledge of fishing, ecology, an and/or healthcare, and experience working wi with local organizations. Work Environment and Physical Requirements: • Attendance at numerous meetings and e events outside of the assigned workspace w will be required. • Events may be indoors or outdoors. S Some events occur during evenings and w weekends, but hours will be flexible. • This person will need to transport b boxes of outreach items that may weigh up to 4 40 pounds. • Ability to work occasionally at a h home office. • Occasional trips to the MDHHS L Lansing office. • Means to transport outreach supplies and event materi and event materials throughout the city of Detroit, Downriv Detroit, Downriver, and surrounding areas.
