Position Description: The SHIFT Program at the University of Texas at Austin is now hiring for the following position: Health Education Coordinator II – Community Engagement and Environmental Strategies Coordinator.

SHIFT is a new and innovative program that aims to change the campus culture around substance use from one of misuse to one grounded in well?being. SHIFT is comprised of six pilot initiatives that integrate best practices in a public health approach, including environmental strategies, for which this position will help lead.

The Community Engagement and Environmental Strategies Coordinator reports to the Director of SHIFT and works as part of an interdisciplinary team.

The purpose of this position is to provide leadership for a coalition?based, environmental approach to reducing high? risk substance use and related harms at the University of Texas at Austin and the surrounding Austin community.

This position will lead the pilots aimed at engaging the community and environmental strategies as it relates to the core functions of SHIFT. This will include collaborating with campus partners throughout the university, as well as the adjacent neighborhood and local hospitality communities, all sharing the common goal of shifting the campus culture around substance use. Candidates should have a strong background in substance misuse prevention and the ability to cultivate strong relationships that will yield positive impact on the community.

The funding for this position is subject to end on August 31, 2022 and continuation beyond August 31, 2022 is contingent upon business need and funding.

Responsibilities Work collaboratively as part of a team to design and implement creative strategies that engage community partners in substance misuse prevention programming. Coordinate SHIFT pilots relating to environmental strategies, including working with the Austin hospitality community and alcohol retail establishments to implement preventative initiatives. Manage coordinated efforts between the university and community partners through regular meetings with campus and community policy makers, business owners, neighbors, and enforcement and accountability agencies. Build and maintain strategic relationships and partnerships on campus and in the surrounding community. Establish and maintain open and clear communication and information sharing at all levels in order to facilitate the development and execution of initiatives. Work with strategic partners to engage students in safer event prevention programming and other harm reduction strategies to help mitigate high?risk behaviors and events. Effectively assess the impact of initiatives and ensure best practices, while continuously evaluating emerging needs. Help create and implement effective training as needed for involved personnel and key partners.

Qualifications: Required Qualifications

Master’s degree in public health, public administration, public affairs, public policy, the social sciences, higher education/student development, health education or a related field. Demonstrated high?level competency and expertise around effective strategies for preventing substance use and impact the culture of drinking and drug use among in the higher education setting. Demonstrated experience establishing and building successful partnerships toward a common goal or coalition leadership. Three years of experience directly related to duties/responsibilities of this position. Extensive knowledge of current/emerging college health issues, intervention methods, health behavior change theories, ecological framework, and evidence?based practice. Ability to work seamlessly across multiple populations and disciplines, including but not limited to faculty, staff, students, senior administrators, trustees, parents, alum, city officials, local merchants, and community residents. Demonstrated ability in core areas of program planning. Demonstrated oral /written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to professionally navigate complex political and administrative environments; ability to be an advocate and collaborate with other leaders and organizations with common goals; experience working with community leadership. Excellent computer skills; MS Office Suite proficient; working knowledge of SPSS or other statistical analysis software. Cultural competency; demonstrated ability to successfully work with a diverse community and provide services from a non? judgmental perspective. Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications Five or more years of experience directly related to duties/responsibilities of this position. At least five years of progressively responsible leadership in student/community health, wellness and safety issues. Ability to take initiative, balance multiple projects, and work autonomously and as a member of a team. Knowledge and experience with assessment methods and evaluative processes. Demonstrated experience using innovative technology and methods to enhance outreach efforts. Work experience within a higher education setting or with the college student population. Familiarity with research and best practices in college health promotion. Proven record of delivering quality results in a timely manner. Social media management in a professional capacity.

This position is full time, 40 hours a week; typical hours are Monday-Friday 8:00- 5:00, however, there may be occasional night and weekend work. The position is non-permanent, with a three year funding commitment established. The position has potential for yearly renewal thereafter.
