Position Description: The Division of Public Health is accepting applications for a Healthcare Associated Infections Epidemiologist. The Epidemiologist in this position will work with infection prevention partners, hospitals, physicians, local health departments, laboratories, citizens, media, and others to increase awareness about healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and to promote evidence-based public health interventions aimed at reducing these HAIs. This position has primary responsibility for the following activities: • Analysis of data reported to NC through CDC’s National Healthcare Associated Safety Network (NHSN) • Maintain a comprehensive statewide plan for validation of HAI data • Develop statistical algorithms for identifying aberrations in surveillance data • Publish and disseminate standardized quarterly and annual quality HAI reports • Conduct routine remote and on-site data quality evaluations with surveillance sites • Provide training and assistance for facility staff to improve surveillance and reporting • Encourage facilities to enroll in infection prevention collaboratives • Lead outbreak response investigations in all types of healthcare settings • Conduct surveillance for and response to antimicrobial resistant organisms

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES / COMPETENCIES:

Qualified candidates must document on the application that they possess all of the following: • Working knowledge of disease surveillance, data collection, data analysis, interpretation methods, and principles of case and outbreak investigations • Working knowledge of healthcare associated infections and antimicrobial resistant organisms • Working knowledge of infection prevention and control principles and practices • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with the public, healthcare professionals, and others • Excellent computer skills covering a range of application and statistical analysis software packages, including Excel, SAS, R, SPSS, and STATA.

Management Preferences: • Knowledge of communicable diseases, infection prevention, healthcare associated infections, antimicrobial resistant organisms, and antimicrobial stewardship principles. • Knowledge of various types of surveillance systems and their applications, including NSHN • Knowledge of information technology systems, particularly as they apply to surveillance systems, such as Geographic Information System • Certification in Infection Control (CIC)

Qualifications: MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Master's degree in Epidemiology or closely related health field from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

The Communicable Disease Branch of the Division of Public Health primarily deals with infectious diseases that are reportable by law to the state health department, as well as a few other communicable diseases of public health significance, such as influenza, norovirus infection and certain healthcare-associated infections.
