Position Description: The Department of Surgery, within the Section of Surgical Sciences, is recruiting an open rank, tenure track faculty member on the Investigator Track at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN.

The successful applicant is expected to develop an independent research program and apply for extramural grants. No formal teaching is expected. The research area is open, but we do have preference for health services research in organ transplantation, or surgery more broadly, intervention research, health disparities, or bioethics.

Qualifications: Applicants should have a PhD or DSc (or equivalent) and a record of scholarship in health services research and/or bioethics, skills in collaborating across disciplines, and a strong commitment to team-based research. This successful individual will be dedicated to collaborating with the Director of Surgical Outcomes Research and Director of Transplant Outcomes Research to help build those research portfolios. S/he/they will be expected to establish or continue her/his/their own independently funded research program (R01 or equivalent). S/he/they should be collaborative, collegial, and comfortable working across diverse environments. Academic rank, tenure, and additional leadership opportunities and resources will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. The successful candidate will receive start-up funds, research support, and a competitive salary.

Organization Description: The Section is comprised of seven Departments and ten Divisions with more than 240 clinical and research faculty, 118 residents and 19 fellows. The Section’s Center for Outcomes Research in Surgery is a multidisciplinary, collaborative group with a broad range of projects. The Transplant Center is one of the largest transplant centers in the Southeast and is the fifth largest transplant center in the US by volume.

At the institutional level, VUMC supports outcomes research through a number of mechanisms including the Vanderbilt Center for Health Services Research (HSR), a critical component of the Vanderbilt Institute for Medicine and Public Health. The Center brings together over 160 scientists and other professionals from across Vanderbilt to solve problems in health care delivery and quality, all within an innovative multidisciplinary research infrastructure. Additional resources include the VA Quality Scholars Program which has a long partnership with our surgical residency. There is robust set of core facilities including database management and analysis, implementation science, and qualitative research. The Section also partners with the Vanderbilt Department of Biostatistics and the Center for Quantitative Sciences.
