Position Description: The Pennsylvania Department of Public Health, Bureau of Epidemiology, Healthcare Associated Infections (HAI) Program is seeking a Public Health Physician. Provide statewide surveillance support, lead investigations, and develop solutions to identify and control infectious disease outbreaks in healthcare settings. Serve as an expert consultant to medical providers located in over 200 hospitals, more than 700 nursing homes, and other types of healthcare settings. Direct epidemiologic activities and provide vision, leadership and supervision to the HAIAR program at the agency. Create and develop effective solutions necessary to quickly limit adverse health outcomes and economic hardships related to HAIs. Review, develop and recommend revisions to statewide communicable disease policy and procedures. Analyze data and collaborate in the maintenance of a statewide system of infectious disease surveillance and reporting including content, input, and the resulting analysis related to HAIs or community associated Multi-Drug Resistant Organisms (MDROs). Oversee and participate in the preparation of grant applications, progress reports, scientific articles, and presentations and other deliverables reflecting the status of HAI epidemiological programs in the Commonwealth. Collaborate with medical and public health partners in developing the HAI infrastructure.

Qualifications: Active license with PA State Medicine Board or PA Osteopathic Medicine Board to practice medicine (MD) or osteopathy (DO) or eligibility for such licensure, prior to hire. MD/DO degree from a medical school approved or recognized by the Pennsylvania Medical Licensing Board or the Pennsylvania Osteopathic Licensing Board AND completion of an approved U.S. residency training program; AND two (2) years of professional medical experience, including one (1) year in a public health setting.

1. Communicate complex technical information on infections and their prevention measures to a variety of audiences (scientific to general public) in press conferences or other public speaking engagements, in oral, written or graphic form. 2. Proficiency in SAS or R data analysis and reporting application. 3. Working knowledge of antibiotic stewardship principles and prevention of multidrug resistant organisms. 4. Knowledge of systems used to collect data in a healthcare or community setting. 5. Familiarity with clinical diagnostic options and clinical decision making. 6. Knowledge of epidemiologic principles and methods.
