Purpose of Job The purpose of this classification is to translate and interpret written or spoken communications from one language or speaker to a second language. Interprets approximate or exact message of speaker into specified language
Essential Functions The Interpreter is responsible for the following essential functions:
Provide professional interpretation services for Limited English Proficiency (LEP) patients in Knox County Health Department (KCHD), clinic, home, and community settings
Interpret for KCHD staff pertaining to registration processes, performance of medical exams, explanation of benefits, medical treatments, medication administration, eligibility for programs and services, funds owed, and follow up appointments, and other Health Department related items
Facilitate communication between patients and providers, rendering all information clearly and accurately from the source language into the target language
Adjust linguistic register, as necessary
Explain or research terms that have no direct linguistic equivalent
Provide necessary cultural framework allowing audience to understand colloquialisms, slang, and difficult concepts in a simple manner
Serve as administrative support in all aspects of the client’s visit
Read written materials, such as pamphlets, brochures, and instructions, and rewrite material into specified language according to established rules of grammar
Translate materials into second language according to established rules of grammar
Perform other related duties as assigned by the LEP Coordinator or Clinic Manager
