CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is available in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia. Candidate should reside within 50 miles of the official duty location (Atlanta, Georgia). Hybrid participation may be available from within 50 miles of the official duty location.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.
The EBS Team, formerly the Global Disease Detection Operations Center (GDDOC), was founded in 2006 and became operational in 2007. Founded upon the WHO Alert and Response Operations and their associated Public Health Intelligence Unit, the EBS Team is considered a global gold standard for conducting event- based surveillance for early warning purposes. In this regard, the EBS team is tasked with the detection and notification of acute outbreaks occurring around the world so to position CDC assets to quickly and effectively respond.
Research Project: The ORISE fellow will learn about the systematic collection and scanning of EBS information for signal detection and event reporting purposes. The fellow will learn about verification activities as well as in the classification of risk and public health impact. The fellow will learn about analyst responsibilities for a minimum of two ongoing acute public health events and will learn by prospective monitoring and updating of information associated with those designated events. The fellow will also have exposure to, and participation in, the myriad of systems and networks utilized by CDC for enhancing epidemic intelligence globally.
Learning Objectives: It is expected that this fellow will gain experience collaborating with CDC subject matter experts, CDC country offices and partner organizations, including WHO, for the tracking of acute outbreaks around the world. This fellow will become familiar with public health intelligence systems, networks and tools and learn how to effectively communicate surveillance data for early warning to inform rapid response measures.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: September 1, 2024. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.
Level of Participation: The appointment is full time.
Participant Stipend: Stipend rates may vary based on numerous factors, including opportunity, location, education, and experience. If you are interviewed, you can inquire about the exact stipend rate at that time and if selected, your appointment offer will include the monthly stipend rate.

ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
