The Notre Dame Research Communications (NDRC) team provides strategic support and guidance, as well as execution, for ND's research communications needs, especially within its approximately 25 reporting units. NDR is now searching for a Research Communications Specialist to join the central team, which is composed of six other staff members and the director of research communications. This role will specifically support one of the NDR units, the Eck Institute for Global Health (EIGH) on a 60% capacity, while the other 40% will be assigned based on upcoming project needs by the director. Eck Institute for Global Health (EIGH) Support The EIGH is an endowed University institute that recognizes health as a fundamental human right and works to promote research, training, and service to advance health standards and reduce health disparities for all. The EIGH brings together multidisciplinary teams to understand and address health challenges that disproportionately affect the poor and to train the next generation of global health leaders. For 3 days a week, the Research Communications Specialist (RCS) will support the EIGH's communications efforts, especially as they relate to the promotion of its faculty and their research, recruitment of students to the masters of science in global health program, and more. While primarily embedded in the NDRC team, as part of the EIGH role, the RCS will:
• Attend all relevant EIGH team meetings. • Manage the EIGH website, using the CMS Conductor, on a daily basis. • Manage all EIGH social media accounts, including updating the X account on a weekly basis, creating and managing a EIGH LinkedIn group aimed at alumni connections on a bimonthly basis, and managing a EIGH LinkedIn company page aimed at masters recruitment on a weekly or biweekly basis. Other social media channels may be considered in the future. • Source, draft, edit, and publish research or student stories on a monthly basis, or as needed. • Create a quarterly Emma newsletter, including managing the mailing list. • Attend / provide support at EIGH-sponsored or -involved events, locally, regionally, nationally, or abroad. • Source and manage promotional items. • Provide management of digital signage on Korbyt, including the creation and promotion of such signs. • Draft relevant print materials, as needed. • Support ongoing recruitment efforts for the masters program and other educational programs, as required. • Provide monthly reporting on all of the above items. • Manage one student intern to support the deliverables above.
For 1 day a week, the RCS will be assigned special projects by the director of research communications and/or will be assigned to support another endowed or grant-funded research unit in need of specialized research communications. The RCS will be expected to attend NDRC team meetings and one-on-one meetings with the director of research communications (1 day a week). This is a hybrid position based in South Bend, Indiana. Overall, this collaborative, solutions- oriented problem solver, who has an understanding of, and enthusiasm for, higher education, science, and research, and can work within embargoed and/or confidential arrangements, will be expected to work diplomatically as part of the NDRC team to support all existing NDR communications services, including graphic design, videography, and more. The RCS will work closely with the wider communications network at Notre Dame, as well, including with colleagues in the Colleges and Schools, the Office of Public Affairs and Communications, Notre Dame Global, the Office of Development, and more. Minimum Qualifications:
Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree and 3 to 4 years of relevant work experience
• English, public relations, or other communications degree with an interest in STEM fields desired. Alternatively, a science or engineering background with strong writing skills is beneficial.
Skills:
• Candidate must be a creative and collaborative problem-solver with a proven ability to manage a continuous, professional presence in all areas of communications. Proficiency in Macintosh platforms. Experience with Adobe products preferred. Proficiency in Google products required, including email, calendar, sheets, docs, analytics, and more. • Experience using content management systems (i.e. Conductor, WordPress, etc.) and experience using social media (X, LinkedIn, or others) for business purposes is required. Experience using email marketing software (i.e. Emma) required. Experience with Slate desired. • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required, including research, fact- checking, and editing. Well-organized and detail-oriented, with an ability to multitask and handle shifting priorities. Candidates will need the ability to function as a team member to fulfill team objectives while working collaboratively with the highest standards of confidentiality, discretion, and diplomacy. • Enthusiasm and ability to meet deadlines, creative and strategic thinking, strong organizational skills, detail-oriented, and a collaborative style, even when in a remote environment, and the ability to work effectively within a diverse population. Ability to maintain confidentiality is essential.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Master’s degree preferred. • Past experience working in higher education or academic setting and past experience in STEM disciplines desired. • Knowledge of AP Style desired. • Must have a valid passport, or an ability to successfully apply for one, as some international travel may be required.
