Position Description: The Health Systems Management and Policy (HSMP) Division within the School of Public Health (SPH) at the University of Memphis invites applications for a nine-month tenure track Assistant Professor position.

As a tenure-track faculty member, the candidate will be expected to conduct research and seek external research funding. Additional duties and responsibilities include teaching in the MHA and other SPH programs, mentoring students, and serving on committees to further develop, support, and enhance the HSMP Division and the SPH.

Qualifications: Candidates for the position must hold an earned doctorate degree in health systems management and policy or a closely related field at the time of employment. Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate: (a) teaching experience or demonstrated potential for success in teaching MHA and other SPH courses (especially in the areas of healthcare law, healthcare quality and outcomes management, and health administration information systems), (b) ability to engage in research and scholarly activities as evidenced by publication in refereed journals and external funding; and (c) ability to work collaboratively and grow MHA locally, nationally, and globally. Areas of research interest are open. However, candidates with research backgrounds in health policy, health economics, healthcare services research, health informatics, and/or quantitative methods in health services will be given preference.

Organization Description: The HSMP Division offers the Master of Health Administration (MHA) Program, which is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education (CAHME) and is nationally ranked by U.S. News and World Report. The MHA degree is offered both on campus and entirely online. The program is housed within the SPH, which is accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH).

In addition to the MHA program, the CEPH- accredited School of Public Health (https://www.memphis.edu/sph/contact/index.ph p) offers Master of Public Health (MPH) degrees with concentrations in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Urban Health, and Social and Behavioral Sciences, as well as a Master of Science (MS) degree in Biostatistics. The SPH also offers a Bachelor of Science in Public Health, and PhD programs in Epidemiology and Biostatistics and in Social and Behavioral Health. Recently, SPH was awarded the prestigious Harrison C. Spencer Award for Outstanding Community Service in 2024 by the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH). The school also has a strong research focus with over $20 million in active grants and contracts in its portfolio.

The University of Memphis is a comprehensive university classified as a Carnegie R1 Doctoral Research Extensive Public Institution. The University has 12 colleges and schools, enrolling approximately 22,000 students, including 4,300 in graduate degree programs. Prospects for collaborative and interdisciplinary research exist with various university research centers, including the FedEx Institute of Technology, the W. Harry Feinstone Center for Genomic Research, the Methodist Le Bonheur Center for Healthcare Economics, the Benjamin L. Hooks Institute for Social Change, and the School of Urban Affairs and Public Policy. Collaborative agreements allow for cross-institutional work with Shelby County Health Department, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, as well as partnerships with Baptist Memorial Healthcare System, Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare System, West Cancer Center, and other community health clinics and systems.
