Position Description: This position supports the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) mission and strategic plan by supporting data and evaluation efforts of the California Home Visiting Program which promotes the health and wellness of participating families.

The incumbent works under the supervision of the Research Scientist Supervisor I (RSS I), Chief of the Home Visiting Federal Data Reporting Unit, and will serve as a staff scientist contributing to the design and implementation of Maternal, Child, and Adolescent Health (MCAH) program monitoring and federal data reporting efforts for the California Home Visiting Program (CHVP). The Research Scientist (RS I) plans, organizes, and carries out scientific research studies of limited scientific scope and complexity, and uses tools and methods in the areas of statistics and statistical programming (SAS), data system management, evaluation, epidemiology, project management, stakeholder communication, informatics, and other scientific methods to promote public health in maternal, child and adolescent health populations. The primary objective of these activities is to inform the design, targeting, and evaluation of prevention efforts. This position includes some statewide and local travel or visits, up to 5%, to implementing sites and professional meetings.

The primary responsibilities of the RS I are to provide scientific planning for data operations of existing statewide data systems for CHVP evidence-based home visiting models including configuration of system platform, data collection and variable determination, data analyses and data quality; to provide technical assistance to CHVP programs, program implementation teams and local health jurisdictions to support CQI , data collection, or data interpretation as needed for program evaluation.

Qualifications: Experience: Two years of experience in the California state service performing scientific research duties comparable to those of a Research Scientist I in the stated specialty or a closely related field. One year towards completion of a doctoral degree of the stated specialty or a closely related field may be substituted for one year of the required experience. and Education: Possession of a bachelor's degree in the stated specialty or a closely related field.

Experience: Three years of research experience in the stated specialty or a closely related field. The research experience must have included responsibility for determining research design, choice of methods, and analysis of findings. The research involved in completion of the dissertation required for the doctoral degree may be substituted for one year of the required experience. and

Education: Possession of a master's degree in the stated specialty or in a closely related field.
