CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is available in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.
Research Project: The National Diabetes Prevention Program (National DPP) was authorized by Congress in 2010 to address the increasing burden of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes in the United States. The National DPP is a partnership of public and private organizations working to build a nationwide delivery system for a lifestyle change program proven to prevent or delay onset of type 2 diabetes in adults with prediabetes. The lifestyle change program is founded on the science of the Diabetes Prevention Program research study, and subsequent translation studies, which showed that making modest behavior changes helped adults with prediabetes lose 5% to 7% of their body weight and reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 58% (71% for people over 60 years old). The Diabetes Prevention Recognition Program (DPRP) is the quality assurance arm of the National DPP. Organizations wishing to achieve or maintain recognition for their lifestyle change program are required to submit data to CDC twice a year. Data submitted are used at the organizational level to evaluate performance and inform technical assistance and support. At the aggregate level, these data are analyzed to reflect the impact that the program has had overall in helping reduce risk for type 2 diabetes across the country.
Learning Objectives: Under the guidance of a mentor, the National DPP Data Fellow will learn how to:
Perform data analysis at the organization and aggregate levels using SAS. Use data visualization to present results and findings in a clear and informative way. Use data to inform technical assistance and support to recognized organizations. Gain experience in the development of a manuscript describing the impact of the National DPP on reducing diabetes risk since its inception. This may take the form of literature review, statistical analysis and utilization of data visualization techniques to represent findings in a compelling manner for inclusion in the manuscript. Anticipated Appointment Start Date: October 1, 2024. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.
Level of Participation: The appointment is full time.
Participant Stipend: Stipend rates may vary based on numerous factors, including opportunity, location, education, and experience. If you are interviewed, you can inquire about the exact stipend rate at that time and if selected, your appointment offer will include the monthly stipend rate.

ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
