CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is currently available in the Infectious Diseases Pathology Branch (IDPB) within the Division of High Consequence Pathogens and Pathology (DHCPP) of the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (NCEZID) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.
Research Project: IDPB is the Central Pathology Laboratory (CPL) for the Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance (CHAMPS) network, a Bill & Melinda Gates - funded initiative that operates through the Emory Global Health Institute. CHAMPS uses minimally invasive tissue sampling (MITS) as an alternative to complete diagnostic autopsy for determination of causes of death in children under five from multiple low-middle income countries across Africa and South Asia. As the CPL, IDPB is responsible for collaborating with CHAMPS site pathologists to achieve pathologic diagnoses on MITS specimens. This includes histopathologic evaluation of glass slides and digital slides, conducting diagnostic assays on tissue specimens, preparing histopathology reports, and conducting telepathology sessions with sites for case discussions and pathology training.
IDPB is seeking a fellow to join IDPB's team and contribute to CHAMPS. Under the guidance of a mentor at IDPB, the participant will gain experience in infectious disease pathology research activities using MITS.
Learning Objectives: The fellow will gain experience by receiving training and participating in the following activities:
Managing MITS specimen data life cycle from specimen receipt thorough histopathology, special stains, immunohistochemistry assays, molecular assays, data quality control, data reporting, and inventory management Liaisoning with CHAMPS Program Office regarding upcoming shipments Grossing cases Contributing to summarizing case data for IDPB case review Organizing and conducting of telepathology sessions with CHAMPS sites Improving and managing electronic databases (ELIMS) Maintaining accurate records of process- specific objectives, timelines, outcomes, and deliverables Preparing scientific manuscripts, posters, presentations, literature reviews and technical documents Conducting verbal and written presentations of CHAMPS studies or activities at scientific conferences Participating in the CDC Fellows Professional Development Collective which offers periodic seminars, career mentorship, and networking with other fellows across the CDC Mentor(s): The mentor for this opportunity is Roose Martines (xgn7@cdc.gov). Anticipated Appointment Start Date: November 25, 2024. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.
Level of Participation: The appointment is full time.
Participant Stipend: Stipend rates may vary based on numerous factors, including opportunity, location, education, and experience. If you are interviewed, you can inquire about the exact stipend rate at that time and if selected, your appointment offer will include the monthly stipend rate.

ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
