Position Description: The South Carolina Department of Health is seeking a Public Health Physician to join our team. This position will lead our skilled epidemiologists, public health nurses and physicians in the Communicable Disease Epidemiology Section.

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING:

Providing leadership for a team of four (4) physicians and a larger department of talented public health professionals.

Providing medical and epidemiology consultation to healthcare providers, other public health professionals and the public.

Responding to community and media inquiries regarding communicable diseases.

Leading responses to cases and outbreaks of infectious diseases.

Interpreting public health surveillance data to improve health across South Carolina.

Qualifications: MD or DO and graduation from an accredited medical school, plus completion of a residency in primary care or preventive medicine. Extensive working knowledge of theory, principles, and practices of medicine with specialized knowledge in preventive medicine, infectious and communicable diseases.

At least two (2) years of experience in public health practice or delivery of primary care with increasing supervisory experience. Relevant training like the CDC’s Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) experience or a master's degree in public health or relevant degree can be substituted for one (1) year of experience.

License to practice medicine in South Carolina or license obtained within the expected period dictated by the state licensing board.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, medical practitioners, hospital staff, and other professionals. Excellent written and verbal communications skills. Ability to prepare and present medical and technical materials relating to communicable diseases to professionals, paraprofessionals and the public.

A grasp of public health practice desired via master's prepared in public health training or experience in public health administration.
