Position Description: |
The CDC Foundation seeks two Data Analysts to support the continuation and expansion of the PLACES program, a groundbreaking effort advancing the use of small area estimation (SAE) methods to generate health estimates for small geographic areas across the United States. The Data Analysts will work with the PLACES team at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to gather and compile health-related social needs measures to analyze and interpret into the PLACES database and web platform. The Data Analysts will support the program by working with the team to prepare and analyze public health data from various data sources such as the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. Data Analysts will interpret and transfer population-level and community data annually into the PLACES database to increase accessibility and ease of use by local and state jurisdictions and public health professionals.
PLACES (www.cdc.gov/PLACES) is a collaboration between the CDC, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the CDC Foundation. PLACES provides model-based, population-level analysis and community estimates of health measures to all counties, places (incorporated and census designated places), census tracts, and ZIP Code Tabulation Areas (ZCTAs) across the US. The PLACES team uses advanced small-area estimation (SAE) methods to generate dozens of chronic disease and other health-related measures. PLACES aims to assist local health departments and jurisdictions to better understand the burden and geographic distribution of health measures in their areas and use as a tool in the planning of local public health interventions.
This is an outstanding opportunity to work with the nation’s lead agency charged with protecting the public's health. The successful candidates will be hired by the CDC Foundation and will be organizationally located with the Division of Population Health, National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP).
Atlanta-based candidates are strongly preferred. Relocation expenses are not provided. The salary for this position ranges from $75,000 to $95,000 and will be based on experience and qualifications. Candidates meeting minimum requirements should expect the lower end of this range, but candidates that exceed minimum requirements are also encouraged to apply and would be eligible for a higher starting salary based on qualifications. The CDC Foundation offers an attractive benefits package. This is a full-time position with grant funding anticipated through at least October 31, 2026.
Duties and Responsibilities Include: Download, compile, prepare, analyze, and interpret quantitative data from various data collection sources (primarily the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, U.S. Census, and the American Community Survey) to incorporate into the PLACES database. Review existing SAS code, update code as needed (e.g., due to yearly changes in variables or questions), produce the data, and implement the updates to the PLACES database within the required timeline. Perform thorough data quality check throughout data production by following the project’s procedures. Modify code year by year as variables change, questions are changed. Create required datasets for data dissemination and format output as needed. Prepare and submit an annual data quality report. Produce estimates requested by internal and external partners. Collaborate and participate in meetings with internal subject matter experts, across divisions and centers, and other project partners. May participate in data management and data quality checks related to health studies. Perform other related work as required.
