Position Description: The Arnold School of Public Health at the University of South Carolina is seeking a visionary leader to serve as the next Chair of the Department of Health Promotion, Education, and Behavior. The successful candidate will provide strategic leadership and foster an environment of academic excellence, inclusivity, and innovation. The successful candidate will be an established academic leader who can facilitate faculty, staff, and student development and build collaborations with intramural and extramural partners. Qualifications include an earned doctorate in public health or related discipline, demonstrated evidence of scholarly achievement, an established record of acquiring extramural funding, and teaching and mentoring excellence.

The Department of Health Promotion, Education, and Behavior has two undergraduate minors, master’s programs (MPH, online professional MPH), doctoral (PhD) degree program, and graduate certificates in aging, global health, and health communication. Department faculty members also contribute to teaching for the Arnold School’s bachelor’s (BA, BS) program.

The Department emphasizes impactful research and meaningful community engagement and has a rich tradition of excellence in education. The faculty and students examine how policy, environmental, institutional, and individual actions influence and can improve the public’s health and healthcare delivery and reduce health disparities. Faculty and students work in global, national, and local settings; value qualitative and quantitative research methods; and collaborate with many departments, communities, and institutions. HPEB faculty members also serve in active leadership roles for several school- and campus-wide interdisciplinary research initiatives, including the Global Health Initiative, Nutrition Consortium, Office for the Study of Aging, Consortium for Latino Health Studies, USC Big Data Health Science Center, South Carolina SmartState Center for Healthcare Quality, and SmartState Technology Center to Promote Healthy Lifestyles.

The University of South Carolina is in Columbia, South Carolina, the state capital. Abundant recreational, cultural, and educational opportunities provide an excellent quality of life.
