Position Description: |
The PLACE Program (Policies for Livable, Active Communities and Environments) at the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health is seeking a Senior Epidemiologist to support Vision Zero, a cutting-edge safety initiative emphasizing systematic, data-driven decision making as a key strategy for eliminating traffic deaths and severe injuries. You will contribute to safer, healthier, and more equitable communities by applying your data science skills to support PLACE goals. This includes data collection and analysis; project evaluation, surveillance and mapping, report writing, and providing technical direction to staff conducting epidemiological analysis
a. Conduct complex epidemiological and statistical analysis of traffic deaths and severe injuries using advanced analytical techniques (e.g., Stata, SAS, ArcGIS). Oversee design and implementation of studies, interpretation of findings, and dissemination of reports, presentations, maps, and other communications. b. Develop evaluation framework for grant-funded initiatives. Plan, design and implement evaluation of Public Health initiatives and serve as content specialist for grant partners in developing evaluation plans for their efforts. c. Conduct ongoing analysis of traffic deaths and severe injuries, examining trends over time, geographic distribution, collision causes, and alcohol-involved injuries and deaths, with a focus on communities of color, low-income communities, and populations at greatest risk, e.g. seniors, bicyclists, and pedestrians to identify groups disproportionately impacted. d. Prepare a Senior Transportation Safety Report consisting of an analysis and written brief describing fatal and severe pedestrian collisions involving seniors in unincorporated areas; key factors contributing to crashes; locations of high injury crashes; need for senior “traffic safety focus areas;” and projects and programs that can help keep older adults safe. e. Prepare and disseminate other written reports and briefs describing results of ongoing equity analysis, project evaluation, interpretation of findings, geospatial maps, and recommendations. f. Oversee development of a traffic safety data dashboard depicting patterns and trends in historical data with maps, charts, and tables, visually representing progress toward reducing traffic deaths and severe injuries. g. Liaise with and convene partner agencies for collaboration around data activities, including for the purpose of establishing data sharing agreements to gain access to large and complex data sets for traffic injury surveillance and analysis purposes; agencies may include Public Works, California Highway Patrol, Emergency Medical Services Agency, trauma hospitals, and others. h. Serve as lead author on peer-reviewed journals articles related to traffic injury surveillance, research, and evaluation. Provides guidance to staff on preparing manuscripts; reviews and edits draft manuscripts; and presents research findings at professional meetings.

Qualifications: |
Minimum Qualifications:
• A Master's degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in epidemiology or its equivalent -and- five years of experience designing, conducting, and evaluating epidemiologic studies and field investigations -OR- A Doctoral degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in epidemiology or its equivalent; and two years of experience designing, conducting, and evaluating epidemiologic studies and field investigations. • Experience conducting epidemiological studies, data collection, project evaluation, and surveillance. • Experience conducting complex data analyses on large and small datasets using methodological techniques and computer software appropriate for epidemiological analysis.
• A valid California driver’s license, proof of vehicle insurance, and reliable transportation or ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
Desirable Qualifications:
• Interest in data-driven decision- making, public service, and addressing equity challenges through innovative applications of epidemiology; • Experience conducting investigations of public health issues, including collecting, and analyzing health and behavioral health data; preparing interpretation of findings and disseminating reports, dashboards, and recommendations. • Demonstrated strong technical skills (epidemiologic data analytic skills, and experience with statistical programs and data visualization software), as well as the ability to effectively translate data to the public. • Experience providing technical direction to staff conducting data analysis, evaluation, and mapping. • Experience collaborating with a variety of stakeholders including partner agency staff, community members, and decision-makers. • Excellent oral and written communication skills. • Strong project management skills and follow-through. • Understanding of the relationship between active transportation and public health.
